Gyles Brandreth wants to reveal Queen Elizabeth’s “inner life” in his new book.
The 77-year-old author, who has known the monarch, who died in September aged 96, since she was 20 and recently published Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, explained that his idea for the biography arose from a line in a letter Words from Elizabeth I to Edward VI.
He said: “I was in the Elizabeth Room in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle two days before she did this.
“I saw a portrait of Elizabeth I, which she sent to her brother Edward VI, and a letter saying she regretted not being able to show him what was on her mind.
“That’s when I thought, ‘This is my challenge’.
“Everyone knows what the Queen looks like, she’s one of the most photographed women in the world.
“But can I reveal her real face? Her inner world?
“It was my ambitious task to showcase her extraordinary personality, her sense of humor and what makes her who she is.
“It’s in honor of her centennial, the whole story.”
The former MP was particularly keen to paint pictures of the Queen in her youth for those who only remember her as a “grandmother”.
He said: “Young people like my seven grandchildren only see her as a grandmother, an older lady.
“They didn’t realize what a fascinating person she was.
“My favorite photo of her at Buckingham Palace with Cecil Beaton when she was 16, and that photo of her wearing a hat.
“It’s very charming and you can see how the Duke of Edinburgh fell in love with her.”
According to Gales, the queen has known for years that he was writing a book about her.
He told HELLO in the UK! Magazine: “At one event, the Duke of Edinburgh joked, ‘Do you know he’s writing about you? He’s going to chop you up.
“The Queen looked alarmed, so I assured her it would be a matter of respect and admiration. “If you believe in that, you’ll believe in anything,” the Duke grinned.
