Hamilton praised by F1 champions for ‘admirable’ response to 2021 Abu Dhabi GP

[ad_1]

Hamilton, who had been on track to win a record-breaking eighth world title, dominated the 2021 duel until mishandled safety car This period revolutionized the game and the outcome of the tournament.

The Mercedes driver was overtaken by Red Bull on the final lap Max Verstappenhe then claimed the tournament victory and his first title in dramatic and controversial fashion.

The seven-time world champion has been unable to win a race or challenge for the world title in the past 18 months, and Verstappen is on the hunt for a third consecutive drivers’ title.

1996 world champion Hill praised Hamilton for his performance in difficult times and backed the Briton to win an eighth title before retiring from F1.

“It is admirable that Lewis has kept his head held high following the events in Abu Dhabi,” Hill told the PA.

“He’s back to the task at hand, and this year he’s driving better than before. He’s starting to blend in with that car now, and he’s worked out some of the issues he was facing.

“So, I’d be surprised if he didn’t want to get high by winning an eighth title, and he’s definitely motivated by that. He’s got this longevity and he’s going to take care of himself.

“He needs a competitive car and, given the slightest chance, someone like Lewis will rise to that challenge and find more in himself. What we’re seeing at the moment is a happier Hamilton and a happier Hamilton Just a faster Hamilton.”

Hamilton, 38, is out of contract at the end of this season but is expected to sign a new deal with Mercedes when he is likely to turn 40.

Hamilton held talks with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff last month and there is speculation a deal could be finalized ahead of next week’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

A long-term ambassadorship for Mercedes is believed to be part of Hamilton’s negotiations.

“Lewis is rumored to be finalizing a long-term deal beyond his racing career,” Hill added.

“The car companies themselves are also involved, so there is a high level of bureaucracy in this deal.”
