One would agree that happiness is a fanciful concept that people eagerly pursue without knowing how to achieve it. All human endeavors are directed toward the goal of eternal happiness and well-being, and it is evident that this is not everyone’s destiny.

When the Global Happiness Report was released a few weeks ago, citing average life ratings for countries around the world, I thought the United Arab Emirates would be in the top 25 or so, not based on history, but based on my real experience as a long-term resident.

Ranked 26th, the UAE achieved impressive scores on almost every parameter derived from specific happiness measures, which often mean little to the average person. But ask a person if the external circumstances of her current life are generally happy, and see if the answer is an affirmative “yes” or a depressing “no,” and you’ll know if she’s really in the happy zone of life. For me Saying this is the truest way to measure satisfaction, it is almost impossible for us to find a single person living in the UAE who can answer this question in the negative.

Rankings aside, there are no two sayings, and reasons can be hastily given, about the high levels of happiness enjoyed by UAE citizens and residents, each vying for primacy. First, the country offers a positive start to life for most expats. The word “affluent” has become a reality for us thanks to a tax-free income structure and a work environment that fosters growth and long-term prosperity. Even the smallest denominators on the social ladder here will admit that their lives have flourished and their quality of life has improved significantly as they have moved to the country.

It is a place built on multicultural values that allow people of nearly 200 nationalities to coexist in love, peace and harmony, allowing them to follow their beliefs without interference or discord. The UAE’s heterogeneous structure allows for freedom of life choice, something only a handful of countries in the Index report excel in.

In most cases, the political or social unrest that rocks the rest of the world will not affect the peace of the people here. It is as if we are insulated from all the ills of the world, including the basest crimes. I know people who leave their wallets or phones in places like the subway or food courts and get them back without losing dirhams. Where else in the world can you walk down the street in the middle of the night without fear of being mugged or followed? The prescribed rules will be fully obeyed by people, not by force, but by their own will. This is an ecosystem for the good life, with citizens and residents keenly aware of their responsibilities and pledged not to overthrow the apple cart for any form of misdemeanor.

One can endlessly extol the virtues of living in a place like the UAE, but what makes it all a happy union is the way the UAE government prioritizes the well-being of its people as an operational goal. It established a Ministry of Happiness in 2016, signaling that it has taken responsibility for “adjusting and promoting government policies to create social welfare and satisfaction”.

It can only be called effective and empowering when rulers and authorities insist on building a country based on the skills, safety and satisfaction of its people. A country can only be marked as successful if its people are unanimously happy, that’s not to say there won’t be social and economic differences, but if there is a constant stream of positive emotions that support and drive people’s lives then it is a growing one Paradise on a planet where reasons to smile are hard to find. From this point of view, life here is a blissful sanctuary for all those who have set up camp in the UAE. – Asha Iyer Kumar is an author and children’s writing coach living in Dubai.
