PADRAIG HARRINGTON scored a brilliant top-five finish today after the final round of the HSBC Championship in Abu Dhabi as hopes of success for joint leader Shane Lowry were dashed overnight.
Lowry started the day at 13-under par, sharing the lead with Francesco Molinari and Min-woo Lee, but the Offaly man finished with a disappointing 76-over Finished in four strokes and is 28th in the overall standings.
French golfer Victor Perez shot 18-under-par 66 to win decisively by one stroke ahead of Sebastian Soderbergh and Lee Min-woo.
Following yesterday’s excellent 64, the 51-year-old Harrington tied for third with a 67 in today’s final round.
After a stellar success on the Champions Tour last season, Harrington made his presence felt here. He made bogey in the first round, but he had another shot in the next round, and he had seven birdies. He stayed in par the day after the 7th hole, then birdied five of the next seven holes to shine on the 8th, 10th, 12th, 13th and 14th holes.
It was a tough day for Lowry, who dropped in the rankings after a nightmarish play on the final hole. He started an impressive round with birdies on Nos. 2 and 5 that saw him move to 15 under before bogeys on Nos. 6 and 9 canceled those .
The 2019 Open champion birdied the 12th and 13th holes again, but hopes of a final push were dashed as he was 6-over for the next four holes, including the 16th. Triple bogey on the par four hole.
Seamus Power shot a 3-under 69 today, bringing his tournament score to -10.
The Watford man got off to a slow start, making two bogeys on his opening six holes, then made an eagle three-pointer at No. 7, bogeyed No. 8 and birdied No. 9 , who shot par for the day in the turn. He made progress on the back nine without dropping a ball and birdied the 11th, 12th and 14th holes.
Lowry started the day as United leader after an impressive day for the Irish in the United Arab Emirates yesterday.
Lowry is tied for the lead with former British Open champion Molinari and Australia’s Min Woo Lee, a trio at 13 under after three rounds. The Offaly native shot a 66 yesterday.
Meanwhile, Harrington started the day two shots behind after a third-round 64. The Dubliner turned back the years with six straight birdies on the back nine as he seeks to become the oldest winner in European Tour/DP World Tour history.
