His Excellency Sheikh Shahbout bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, delivered the United Arab Emirates State Statement at the UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Somalia and called on the international community to support the strengthening of humanitarian and climate change response. nation. The meeting, which took place during the UAE’s presidency of the UN Security Council in June, was attended by His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, President of Somalia.

HE Sheikh Shahbout bin Nahyan has appealed for assistance to address the plight of millions of Somalis affected by drought and displacement. “Aid should be scaled up and coordinated to address the twin humanitarian and climate crises,” he said. His Excellency further underscored the UAE’s commitment to supporting Somalia in these areas, with aid amounting to US$194.6 million between 2018 and 2023.

In his speech, His Excellency also emphasized that acts of terrorism, particularly attacks by Al-Shabaab, pose the most serious threat to Somalia’s political and socio-economic ambitions. His Excellency Sheikh Shahbout bin Nahyan said: “The number of terrorism-related incidents in the first quarter of 2023 exceeded the average for all quarters on record since 2016.” We are deeply concerned about the increase in attacks against civilians and security actors, including attacks against ATMIS personnel and facilities.”

His Excellency Sheikh Shahbout bin Nahyan further underscored the UAE’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s national vision, emphasizing the importance of promoting reconciliation, updating the electoral system and strengthening cooperation between the Somali government and the federal state through the National Consultative Council . He appreciated the efforts of the Somali government to reach agreement and compromise through dialogue and negotiation, which demonstrated their determination to build a Somalia that reflected the aspirations of the Somali people.

During his visit, His Excellency Sheikh Shahbout bin Nahyan also held bilateral meetings with senior United Nations officials and the wider diplomatic community, further reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to international cooperation and partnerships. While addressing the UN Security Council, he met Somali President His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mohammed and WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain. Minister Al Nahyan also met with His Excellency Amar Benjama, Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations.
