A Hindu sanitation worker in Pakistan has been charged with blasphemy for allegedly desecrating the Koran, local media reported. The complaint was reportedly made by local residents after a row with sanitation workers in the Hindu minority community in Hyderabad, Pakistan. Police had to disperse the alleged thugs who had gathered around an apartment building to catch the worker, identified as Ashok Kumar.

Pakistani journalist and columnist Naira Inayat tweeted: “Hindu health worker Ashok Kumar booked for blasphemy under Section 295B for allegedly desecrating the Koran in Hyderabad. This The allegations came after an altercation with shop owner Bilal Abbasi, who subsequently filed a complaint against Kumar.”
“Earlier, a group of alleged thugs had gathered around the apartment building, trying to catch the Hindu. The police dispersed the thugs and arrested the victim,” she added.
While agitated thugs wanted to attack Hindu workers with blasphemous charges, news agency ANI cited local media reports that it was actually a Muslim woman who burned a Muslim holy book.
Social media users praised Hyderabad police for quickly dispersing the violent mob.
One user wrote, “Excellent work by the Pakistani Sindh police in Hyderabad city, there is no room for prejudice: the perpetrators and instigators must be brought to justice now that the disaster has been averted.”
Another user tweeted: “The abuse of harsh blasphemy laws targeting minorities and even members of the Muslim community to settle personal grievances is rampant in Pakistan.”
Pakistan has a tough blasphemy law, and many people have been lynched just for the charges. In December 2021, a Sri Lankan factory manager was arrested beaten to death And set on fire by a mob in Pakistan over blasphemy charges. The vigilante attack sparked outrage, with then-Prime Minister Imran Khan calling it a “day of shame for Pakistan”.
