The University of Hong Kong has topped the list for the third year in a row, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) 2023 ranking of the world’s most international universities.
Two Swiss universities, EPFL and ETH Zurich, came in second and third, while City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology came in fourth and fifth.
The ranking focuses on universities with the strongest links across borders. It uses three indicators from the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 to reward universities with the highest proportion of international students and staff, and those with the most research published in collaboration with global partners. The fourth indicator comes from the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2022, which ranks universities with the strongest international reputation, based on a Times Higher Education survey of 30,000 academics around the world. The findings show that four countries and regions have some of the most international universities in the world.
Hong Kong Polytechnic University
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University came in sixth, with three British universities – Imperial College London, Oxford and Cambridge – seventh, eighth and ninth respectively, and the National University of Singapore in tenth.
Seeta Bhardwa, editor of THE Student, said: “Our research shows that prospective students who want to study in the world’s most international environment should apply to universities in Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore or the UK.
“These institutions have a high proportion of international students and staff, conduct research in collaboration with academics from around the world, and have a strong global reputation to match.”
Forty-three percent of the more than 18,000 students at HKU are international, and the institution teaches in English. Education has an international focus and aims to prepare students to be global citizens who can succeed anywhere in the world. The university plans to expand its international reach and recruit more staff and students from overseas, aiming to become “Asia’s global university”.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) has more than 11,000 students, 62% of whom are international. Students at the institution have many opportunities to participate in exchange programs with other universities, and it also offers students from other universities the opportunity to spend up to three months in one of its on-campus laboratories.
Located in Zurich, the largest city in Switzerland, ETH Zurich has more than 22,000 students from more than 120 countries and is the top university in continental Europe. Students and faculty associated with the institution have won 21 Nobel Prizes – one of the most famous alumni is Albert Einstein.
Bhardwa added: “Universities are by nature global institutions. Often, they are home to communities of students and scholars from around the world who, through research, address some of the world’s most pressing problems.
“Research shows that a diverse student community improves the teaching and learning experience, while giving students the opportunity to spend a better time abroad, which better prepares them to be global citizens.” — trade arab news agency
