Holiday concert kicks off at Jefferson Parish Library | Entertainment / Lifestyle

The Jefferson Parish Library will present a reading by Louisiana Poet Laureate Mona Lisa Saloy on Saturday, December 17 at 2 p.m. at the Eastern Shore Regional Library (4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie) , to commemorate International Human Rights Day.

December 10th is Human Rights Day, the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a landmark document that proclaims the inalienable rights to which every human being is entitled – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, nationality or society birth, property, birth or other status. Available in more than 500 languages, it is the most translated document in the world.

The event is celebrated on December 17th as the East Shore Regional Library is a polling place for the election on Saturday, December 10th.

Saloy is the Conrad N. Hilton Professor of English at Dillard University. Her poetry has appeared in numerous publications, including Louisiana Folklore Miscellany, The Southern Poetry Anthology, and Children’s Folklore Review. Her book “Red Beans & Ricely Yours” won the 2005 TS Eliot Award and the 2006 PEN/Oakland Josephine Miles Award. Saloy is known for writing about the New Orleans Creole cultural experience.

Saloy earned a BA in English from the University of Washington, an MA in Creative Writing and English from San Francisco State University, and a PhD in English and a Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University.

Other poets will read from their work, including Gina Ferrara, Valentine Pierce, Mary Emma Pierson, Brad Richard, Martha McFerrin, Peter Cooley and Andrea Panzeca.

The fifth annual Harry Potter Christmas will be held on Sunday, December 18th from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie. The staff will provide creative crafts, tricky chores, face painting, and more. Clothing is encouraged. This is a family event and all ages are welcome. citizenship class

Civics classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm at the North Kenner Library (630 W. Esplanade, Kenner).

Courses prepare customers who wish to become U.S. citizens. Educator Cesar Munoz teaches free lessons in English and Spanish.

The music events listed below take place at East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie. Each event takes place at 7pm unless otherwise stated.

December 14: The American Legion Post 377 band performs standard and holiday music.

December 15: The New Aurora Saxophone Ensemble, consisting only of saxophones, plays a variety of tunes.

December 19: Musician and teacher Mike Scorsone will host an evening of music for young performers.

December 20th, 1pm: Memory Lane’s Jean, Richard and Sam perform holiday and pop music.

December 22: The Jefferson Parish Community Band of approximately 50 musicians returns with a full musical program for all ages.

Mahjong: For four consecutive Tuesdays, patrons can learn how to play the classic game developed in China in the 19th century.
