“Cooley High” (Standard)
My friend Sergio Mims, a regular contributor to the site and a Chicago film legend, loved the film. It makes me a little sad that he didn’t get his hands on this excellent Criterion edition before he passed away earlier this year. He’ll love the 4K transmission that brings this influential 1975 adult comedy to life.It was a box office hit on a minimal budget and was undoubtedly one of the most important films of its era, the production Spike Lee, John Singletonand many others felt it had an impact on their careers. In 2021, it’s listed on the National Film Registry, a choice I know makes Sergio happy.

House of the Dragon Season 1
HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel doesn’t seem to be stirring the same cultural enthusiasm as its predecessor, but it’s still a huge hit for cable and streaming companies. Interestingly, Warner Bros. recognizes that fans of these shows are often also collectors. I remember the early releases of the Game of Thrones DVDs as absolutely the best DVDs in TV history, with reviews, special features, and details of popular shows. Sadly, the first season of “House of the Dragon” didn’t get that “loaded” treatment – just an hour of close-up feels a bit paltry considering the legacy the show has now become a part of – but it did. brought home a snazzy steelbook version and 4K transfers of the episodes themselves, which doesn’t happen with most new shows in the 2020s.
