Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 18 October 2022— Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) announced plans to launch the ADIA Lab, an independent research center dedicated to fundamental and applied research in data and computational science. ADIA Lab will officially launch on December 2, 2022, the UAE’s 51st National Day, at its base in Abu Dhabi.
The ADIA Lab will operate as an independent entity with broad research objectives, not specific to investment-related applications, and designed to explore the latest trends and techniques in data and computational science across all major research areas.
This will include cutting-edge research in data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and high-performance and quantum computing, with applications to climate change and energy transition, blockchain technology, financial inclusion and investment, decision-making, automation, cybersecurity, Health Sciences, Education, Telecommunications and Space.
The ADIA Lab will collaborate with academic and other institutions around the world to design educational programs, sponsor research projects and fund reproducible research, provide fellowships and internships, conduct workshops, host competitions and best paper awards.
The establishment of the ADIA Lab will provide ADIA with the opportunity to connect and collaborate with global experts in the data and computational science community, while helping to embed scientific thinking in its organization. ADIA employees will also have the opportunity to participate in ADIA Lab seminars and academic programs, and to conduct joint research projects.
ADIA Lab will play an active role in fostering the continued development of Abu Dhabi’s digital ecosystem, focusing on projects that could lead to the birth of start-ups.
ADIA Lab will appoint an advisory board of global thought leaders from a variety of data and computationally intensive science disciplines to advise on the development of its research agenda and program and oversee its implementation.
Dr. Horst Simon has been appointed Director of the ADIA Laboratory.Dr. Simon joins Berkeley Lab (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), where he served as research associate laboratory director and chief research officer for over 10 years. He most recently served as a senior advisor to the director of the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research, a U.S. Department of Energy program.
Dr. Simon is a two-time recipient of the Society for Computing Machinery (ACM) Gordon Bell Award for outstanding achievement in high-performance computing, the ACM SC Time Test Award and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Computing Award Science and Engineering Career Award. He is a member of the publishing team for the biennial TOP500 list of the most powerful supercomputers and is a SIAM Fellow.
