How the Writers’ Strike Could Affect Your Favorite Shows—and a Big Question

Writers Guild of America strike begins On May 2, many questions were raised about the future of TV shows currently airing/streaming and upcoming TV shows.

But first, a primer: According to WGA guidelines, once down, members are prohibited from writing, nor can they pitch or negotiate for work.More importantly, any ever already Written before the strike begins cannot be edited during production.

As TV vet Mike Royce detailed on Twitter, “If a show continues to produce scripts written before the strike, there probably won’t be any changes to scripts produced by anyone during the WGA strike. One word Neither, nor the comma.”

This dictates a limited supply of scripted material on which the network will live on for weeks/months to come.

The 2007-08 WGA strike lasted 100 days and arrived midseason, leading to events such as 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, Brothers and Sistersthree crime scene investigationSecond, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Heroes, How I Met Your Mother, Lost, NCIS, The Office, Scrubs and two and a half men – just to name a few end up producing half or less their seasons. It also reportedly cost the Los Angeles economy $2 billion.

Given the discrepancy between what they are seeking in the new contract and what AMPTP has provided so far, current WGA members are ready to strike, if not longer.
