Hundreds ‘disappeared’ in Kherson, Ukraine under Russian control: report | World News

[ad_1]

Hundreds of people have been jailed or disappeared this year in the Kherson region of Ukraine under Russian control. The men may have been tortured, Reuters reported, citing a Yale University study sponsored by the U.S. State Department.

In a statement on the findings, the State Department said Russia “must cease these operations and withdraw its forces to end an unnecessary war that it cannot and will not win — no matter how despicable and desperate its tactics. “

The study detailed the detention and disappearance of 226 people in Kherson between March and October, a quarter of whom were said to have been tortured. Five of them died during or shortly after their captivity, the study showed.

The report was produced by research labs at the Yale School of Public Health and Conflict Observatory, a State Department-funded program launched in May to collect and examine Russian war crimes and other crimes committed in Ukraine. Evidence of potential atrocity.

Russia denies its soldiers committed the atrocities or targeted people.

Ukraine says a Russian missile strike has knocked out nearly half of Ukraine’s energy system. Authorities in the capital Kyiv also warned that the city could face a “complete shutdown” of the power grid.
