Rapid medical intervention helps patients recover sooner, experts say
Prompt medical intervention saved the life of an Indian expat who suffered a stroke and arrived at the hospital on time to stabilize his condition.
Asghar Ansari, who was experiencing severe dizziness and was unable to move his hands and feet, was lucky enough to arrive at the emergency department at Thumbay University Hospital in Ajman on time.
“I was on my way to work on a construction site (Oct 14). Suddenly, I felt like I lost my balance and couldn’t stand. I managed to contact the doctor on the website and he told me my blood pressure levels had spiked to extreme levels, ” said the 52-year-old stonemason.
Ansari’s blood pressure was monitored a few hours later, but his condition was deteriorating. “My blood pressure was soaring, so I was advised to go to the hospital for treatment,” he said.
After arriving at Thumbay Hospital, he was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he was treated for several days.
Doctors performed a brain scan, which showed Ansari had an acute cerebral infarction. On admission, his blood pressure and temperature rose to emergency levels, and his right leg and arm were severely numb and immobile.
Quick action can reverse symptoms
Three days after Dr. Vivek Karan, a consultant neurologist at Thumbay University Hospital, and his team began treatment, Ansari responded positively and recovered from a life-threatening health condition.
“Rapid medical intervention was the reason why the patient was able to regain mobility in his hands and legs earlier. His condition improved and his legs became stable,” he said.
Talking about the recovery process, Dr. Karan said, “Time is critical in stroke management. The sooner we start treatment, the better the outcome. According to American Heart Association guidelines, every hour delayed in the start of stroke treatment causes the brain to age by 3.6 years. .
Neurologists recommend that people educate themselves using the BEFAST method. This is one of the best ways to reduce the chances of death and permanent disability from stroke.
What is the BEFAST method
Doctors have urged stroke patients to go to the hospital immediately and seek treatment as soon as possible. Clots can be removed with medication or surgery. However, patients may show different signs or symptoms, which is the main reason why people delay seeking medical help,” explained the doctor.
Stroke can be avoided by paying attention to lifestyle issues such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Smoking and stress are also major causes of stroke. Stroke can be prevented through early screening and rapid medical intervention,” concluded Dr. Karan.
