door prize Showrunner David West-Reed and stars Chris O’Dowd, Gabriel Dennis and Josh Segarra joined Deadline’s Contenders TV event on Sunday to discuss Details about their characters, the inspiration for the episodes, the balance between comedy and drama, and a glimpse at season two.
Based on the 2020 novel of the same name by MO Walsh, the Apple TV+ comedy series follows the residents of the small town of Deerfield whose lives are changed forever when a magical machine appears in their grocery store. The machine promises to tap into the potential in everyone, leading people to second-guess their relationships and beliefs. Djouliet Amara, Ally Maki, Sammy Fourlas and Damon Gupton also star.

As middle-aged adults try to embrace the potential of learning their lives from machines, their inner struggles and mid-life crises intensify. It’s a niche dynamic that allows for levity and thought-provoking exploration in equal measure. “A lot of the comedy on the show comes from the distance between where people are and where they imagine themselves to be,” Read said. “As the series develops, you find that you recognize these characters who on the surface may be who they are for a reason, and in each episode, you dig deeper and find out what makes them Tick. I love exploring the gap between how you think of yourself and how the world thinks of you.”

Dennis also praised the uniqueness of the show’s portrayal of people’s different ways of being in the series.In fact, that’s what attracted her door prize first. “What I love is that after I read the script, it’s hard for me to describe the show, and that’s what fascinated me about it,” Dennis said. “There are so many different layers. While teasing what the second season will look like, Read said: “This show is really about the cast and this incredible ensemble.
