Awarded at the Canary Islands Quirino Awards on Friday 12 May, the program offers grants of up to €150,000 (US$163,500), and support programs worth up to €95,000 (US$103,550).

This ambitious program aims to enable producers and creators to explore new technologies within the framework of cross-border collaborations, which is the essence of all Ibermedia grants.

The new initiative is supported by several key partners, including the Quirino Prize for Ibero-American Animation and the Ibero-American Animation Federation, which already have a strong presence in the animation sector in the region.

In addition, the program has received financial support from the Next Generation Fund of the European Recovery, Transformation and Recovery Programme, notably through the Spanish AVS European Center program launched in March 2021, investing €1.62 billion (US$1.77 billion) in the audiovisual sector in Spain , largely through credit facilities and tax breaks.

The call for applications opened on May 12 and will continue until August 21. Projects eligible for funding include prototypes, trailers, pilots, short films and video clips, as long as they meet a minimum five-minute running time requirement and employ new technology tools using animation or open source tools in their development.

José Luis Farias, executive producer of the Quirino Prize and one of the fund’s architects, told typeHe wants applicants to “revolutionize the way they animate.”

Víctor Herreruela, coordinator of Ibermedia’s technology department, supports the idea, hoping that funding will “stimulate what’s to come, we are not closed in terms of tools or technology. In fact, for the first time in the history of Ibermedia format for experimentation.”

The scope of what constitutes a new technology is intentionally widened to encourage creative innovation.

At the Quirino Awards ceremony in Tenerife, Herreruela highlighted the initiative’s aim to address the unique challenges faced by digital animation projects in the region, where the award goes to animation from Latin America, Spain and Portugal.

By supporting Ibero-American and Italian companies working in digital content, Ibermedia Next seeks to create a solid network of contacts in the field and provide a platform to showcase their work.

A key component of the initiative is the Ibermedia Next Plaza platform, a free online tool designed to facilitate connections between industry professionals. Companies and producers can register on the platform to connect with their counterparts in other member countries of the Ibermedia programme. Herreruela emphasized type The importance to the industry of “weaving a network of contacts…to facilitate collaboration among diverse agents, creators, producers and professionals”.

In addition to financial support, selected projects will receive comprehensive training, consulting, outreach and networking opportunities. Beneficiaries will have the opportunity to participate in the promotional activities of Ibero-American Animation Union events such as the Pixelatl Festival in Mexico, the Quirino Awards and the animation of Ventana Sur! Meetups in Buenos Aires as well as other industries.

Ibermedia Next’s innovative approach has chosen the current industry moment because “it is an industry poised to go further… The Ibero-American audiovisual panorama is in constant transformation and our initiatives will help promote A classic line from a program in an out-of-the-box format,” Herreruela said.
