New Delhi

If all goes well, the Indian government will open the first foreign branch of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi, UAE. According to the “Arab News” report, this was revealed by the Indian ambassador to Abu Dhabi.

Located in Delhi, IIT is run by the Ministry of Education and is considered one of the best centers of excellence in training, research and science in India. According to last year’s QS World University Rankings, IIT Delhi was ranked 54th globally for engineering and technology studies.

A team of IIT Delhi faculty members visited the UAE in December to develop a development plan for the branch together with the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK).

According to the plan, the first batch of students will start their courses at IIT Abu Dhabi campus in autumn 2024.

“The November team visit by the director of IIT Delhi was very useful … a memorandum of understanding is being drawn up between ADEK and the Indian Ministry of Education,” Sunjay Sudhir, India’s ambassador to the UAE, told Arab News.

“(We) are working towards completing the first batch by September 2024.”

India’s plan to set up an offshore campus is part of its comprehensive economic partnership agreement with the UAE, which came into force in May.

IIT Delhi is one of 23 IITs operating in the country, offering undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programs.

This will be the first offshore IIT campus.

“Many western countries have campuses in the UAE. India is late to this battle. It is part of India’s expansion of soft power in the region,” Dr Sujata Ashwarya, a professor at the Center for West Asian Studies at Jamiliya Islamic University in New Delhi, told Arab News.

She added that India’s new national education policy for school and university education has been warmly welcomed in the UAE, and the Indian government is considering rolling it out across the Gulf region, excluding the US and UK, to attract international students.

“IITs are the most prestigious educational institutions in India and consistently dominate global rankings,” Aishwarya said.

Therefore, the personal income tax is useful and beneficial to the soft power diplomacy that the (Narendra) Modi government is actively promoting in the region. “
