Imran Khan was shot dead in an apparent ‘assassination attempt’.
The former prime minister of Pakistan is said to have been shot in the leg while marching with his supporters, local news outlets reported.
Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the former cricketer as his car passed by Wazirabad, and Pakistani news channel ARY shared a video showing him being carried through the crowd by attendants with bandages on his legs.
“It was an attempt to kill him, to assassinate him,” a senior aide said.
Sky News correspondent Cordelia Lynch interviewed Khan live – six days into the protest march from Lahore to Islamabad, which brought the country to life after being ousted from power in April part of a campaign to come for early elections – and said there was a sudden “commotion” there after she interviewed him about threats of violence during his trek.
She said: “The wounded were taken to ambulances…there was a lot of panic…people rushed over. No one could fully figure out what was going on.
“Then Imran Khan showed up. As far as I know, he was shot in the left leg.
“In fact, our producer here, Muhammad, was able to see that. He was very close to Imran Khan when he showed up.
“He was taken away … a nearby doctor treated three patients.
“It’s the worst case scenario – the fear for many is that this peaceful protest has the potential to turn violent.”
“Imran Khan is injured, may Allah protect him and the whole country should pray for Imran Khan’s life,” said Farooh Habib of Khan’s Pakistan Justice Movement Party (PTI).
A spokesman for the party said the 70-year-old politician was “safe” and a suspect had been arrested, while leader Assad Omar said Khan was in “stable” condition.
“He is stable. The bullet hit him in the leg. He is being transferred to a hospital in Lahore,” said the former finance minister.
