In the Spotlight with Terra Brantley (Interview with WBOI arts/entertainment reporter Julia Meek)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) – WBOI arts and entertainment reporter Julia Meek is probably the station’s biggest fan and most dedicated employee. She remembered (and kept listening) that it was the first day it aired in Fort Wayne. For over 40 years, Meek has been continuously involved in broadcasting.

“One could say that if it was community-centric and arts-centric, I would probably do it — or have done it,” Meek told WBOI’s general manager and president Terra Brantley. “I’ve been a DJ for years if you will – and it all started with classical music many years ago. But for now, and will continue to do, a weekly themed world and folk musical performance, titled folk tales, This is a weekly joint. “

For the tenured radio host who has put others in the spotlight for decades, Meek has done a lot of famous work himself.Iconic Fort Wayne Mural The story of Fort Wayne At the Hyde Brother’s Booksellers building on Wells St., she became the city’s first female muralist. “I’ve never come across a medium that I don’t like,” she told us, “but I love illustration. My medium is basically ink. Then I paint with it.” Others sitting at 222 Pearl Street, downtown Next to the five murals is one of Mick’s most recent public works, Some things never get old. “The butterfly is a symbol of many good things, but also rebirth and transformation.”

Julia Meek also created posters for two special Three Rivers festivals: 1999 and 2000. “This is the first and only time they have decided to complete an original artwork,” she shared. “The first year, we did what I think are great renderings of the trumpet players in the parade… The second year we did fireworks.” We spoke to John O’Rourke, the director who commissioned these pieces at the time. “I immediately went, ‘Wow! This is so cool!’,” he reflected. “I’m looking for a graphic guy – not a real artist who creates art from the heart and with emotion.”

You can follow Julia Meeks arts and entertainment coverage online here, or listen to the radio on 89.1. “I love Fort Wayne,” she concluded. “I do like telling a good folk tale, and I’ve never come across a medium that I don’t like.”
