Indianapolis — Three Dutch soldiers were shot in downtown Indianapolis early Saturday in what local police believe was a disturbance outside their hotel, authorities said.
The shooting occurred around 3:30 a.m. ET in the entertainment district of Indianapolis. Indianapolis police said officers found three men with gunshot wounds and they were taken to area hospitals.
The Dutch Defense Ministry said one soldier was in critical condition and two others were conscious, while Indianapolis police said two of the soldiers were in critical condition and the third was in stable condition.
The three soldiers were from the commandos and were training in Indiana when the shooting happened in their spare time before their hotel, the ministry said.
Indianapolis police said they believe some sort of altercation between the three victims and one or more other people led to the shooting.
Families of the shooting victims have been notified while Indianapolis police continue to investigate the shooting, the department said.
No one was arrested.
Soldiers have been training at the 1,000-acre (405-hectare) Muscatak Urban Training Center about 40 miles (65 kilometers) southeast of Indianapolis, the Indiana National Guard said. In a statement, the Guard said the center was used for training by the Ministry of Defense “as well as other allies.”
“Dutch soldiers visited Indianapolis at the end of their duty day. Our thoughts and prayers are with the soldiers and their families during this difficult time,” the guard said, WXIN-TV reported.
