Kerala police opened a case earlier last month after relatives of a young woman expressed doubts about her death in Abu Dhabi.
Afeela (27), daughter of Kunnakkattil Aboobacker of Kuttippuram Rangattoor, was found hanged at her residence on June 11. Relatives of Afeela have accused her husband and his family of domestic abuse that led to her death.
The body was taken to Kerala on Friday morning and re-post-mortem was carried out at the Manjeri Medical College Hospital.
A case of unnatural death was registered by the Kuttippuram Police in Malappuram based on the complaint. According to the complaint, Afeela married a Kadalundi native on November 6, 2016. Her husband and his family used to beat her for more dowry. However, Afeela’s family was unable to arrange the payment due to financial difficulties. Afila and her children were dropped off at her home by her father-in-law and brother-in-law a few months ago.
Later, her husband came and brought her and the children home. They were brought back to Abu Dhabi three months ago.
Afeela informed her family by phone that she was still being beaten by her husband. She also sent pictures of the scars from the attack to her sister and uncle.
Afeela’s father-in-law told her family that she was found dead in the early hours of June 11.
Over the past few years, Kerala has seen multiple suicides and murders due to dowry harassment. An investigation is underway into the death of video blogger Rifa Mehnu, who was found hanging from her apartment in Jafiliya, Dubai in the early hours of March 1. The body was exhumed and a new autopsy was carried out at the request of her family, alleging domestic violence by her husband and in-laws.
In another case, a trial court in Kollam recently convicted former assistant motor vehicle inspector S Kiran Kumar and sentenced him to 10 years in prison for driving his wife Vismaya to suicide.
