The Qatar website reported that Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Oman will form a joint navy under the auspices of China to strengthen maritime security in the Persian Gulf.
Jadid The report, published on Friday, said China had begun mediating talks between Tehran, Riyadh and Abu Dhabi aimed at enhancing maritime navigation security in the strategic waters.
Back in March, Beijing successfully brokered talks between Tehran and Riyadh that led to the Persian Gulf states signing an agreement that would restore diplomatic ties.
Persian Gulf states have agreed to Beijing’s mediation on such sensitive issues, according to observers, a sign of China’s growing influence in the region, rather than Washington’s waning influence.
Since the victory of Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979, the Islamic Republic has opposed foreign interference and presence in the region, asserting that regional issues must be resolved by regional players themselves.
The latest instance of opposition occurred last Friday, when the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval commander flatly dismissed the presence of US troops in the Persian Gulf under the pretext of ensuring the security of the sea.
Rear Admiral Alireza Tansili said that only Iran and other regional countries can ensure the safety of the Persian Gulf, and there is no need for the United States and other countries to appear in the waterway. “If we back down from the enemy, it will surely dominate us and we have no choice but to persevere in resistance, which is the path to victory for our nation,” he said.
UAE withdraws from US-led naval force
At the same time, the UAE announced its withdrawal from the US-led naval force.
Abu Dhabi has withdrawn from joint maritime forces operating in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, the UAE foreign ministry website said on Wednesday.
The UAE decided to abandon the naval alliance after an extensive assessment of its security needs, the ministry said.
Analysts say Abu Dhabi’s choice to withdraw troops is in line with its ambition to diversify its security ties.
