Iran says it foiled cyber attack on central bank | World News

[ad_1]

Iran has thwarted a cyberattack on its central bank, Iran’s telecommunications infrastructure company said on Friday.

Anonymous and other global hacking groups threatened in October to launch cyberattacks on Iranian institutions and officials to support anti-government protests and bypass internet censorship there.

The head of infrastructure communications firm Amir Mohammadzadeh Lajevardi said the central bank was the target of a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on Thursday night, the official IRNA news agency quoted him as saying.

A DDoS attack attempts to cripple a server by flooding it with internet traffic.

“These days, the largest number of foreign attacks are on banks and financial institutions, internet providers and communications infrastructure, and those attacks have been repelled,” Lajevardi said. IRNA did not provide further details.

The central bank said in September that a cyber attack briefly took its website offline.

Internet access in Iran has been severely restricted since widespread protests erupted in mid-September after a young Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, was detained by morality police while enforcing a mandatory dress code.
