Irena members drive global energy action on the road to COP28

[ad_1]

At the 13th Irena Congress, members affirmed their readiness to fully support the UAE’s COP28 presidency by building the latest knowledge on the renewable energy transition and leveraging international cooperation through the institution’s global platform. Reaching a consensus on what the 2030 roadmap must look like is critical to advancing the global energy agenda.

Short-term action must be prioritized to urgently accelerate the energy transition in the coming years and align the 1.5°C path to 2050. Here are energy leaders at the conference discussing “The World’s Energy Transition – A Global Stocktake.”

Given the 2030 timeline for halving emissions and meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, energy leaders from government, the private sector and international organizations provide insights on the priority actions needed in the coming years. The discussion concluded that:

• The world is not on track to meet climate and development goals, and in some cases even regressing. Action cannot be delayed and existing solutions must be adopted.

• While each country is different, each must find a way to balance national priorities with short- and long-term goals to accelerate action driven by countries around the world.

• The global stocktake is an important process. Equally important will be a consensus on global priorities after COP28 in Dubai.

• Irena remains the global energy transition platform to accelerate the pace of action.

Francesco La Camera, Director General of Irena, said: “While the energy transition is progressing worldwide, efforts must be accelerated while ensuring that the benefits are distributed equally among countries and communities. International cooperation will play a vital role in ensuring that all countries An opportunity to accelerate the deployment of climate-proof technologies and secure the investments needed to achieve their goals. Irena’s membership provides a unique platform to advance the global energy agenda at COP28 and beyond.”

Energy has a huge impact on the implementation of climate action. Irena’s World Energy Transition Outlook points to a direction that will persist until 2050. It stresses that staying on this path depends on taking adequate action by 2030, and shows that the technology to enable such progress already exists.

The outlook positions efficiency and electrification as key drivers, supported by renewables, green hydrogen and sustainable modern bioenergy. Crucially, it focuses on policy and socioeconomic impacts in order to provide the necessary nuance for the different circumstances across countries and regions.-TradeArabia News Service
