james gunn is directing a Superman movie.
Superman: Legacy, which Gunn also wrote, is also set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. he and his co-chairs and DC Studios CEO Peter Safran announced on Wednesday.
Gunn said the film follows the superhero’s journey to understand his aristocratic Kryptonian heritage and his small-town, Midwestern upbringing as Clark Kent.
“It’s come a long way to get to this point,” Gunn tweeted Wednesday. “I was offered Superman a few years ago – I initially turned it down because there was no way I could give Superman the dignity he deserved, which felt unique and interesting and emotional. … Then less than a year ago , I see a path.
Gunn also stated that the release date coincides with his late father’s birthday.
“He was my best friend,” Gunn wrote. “He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of movies, and without him, I wouldn’t be making this movie now.”
“Superman: Legacy” will be the first film in the new iteration of the interconnected DC universe, followed by Matt Reeves’ “Batman Part 2,” which is set to hit theaters in October 2025.
