Jamie Lee Curtis and Janelle Monáe Offer $1M in College Scholarships – The Hollywood Reporter

Jamie Lee CurtisJanelle Monae, Margot Robbie, Gracie Abrams and Addison Ray $1 million in college scholarships and full college scholarships awarded Wednesday to high school students from underserved communities in Los Angeles.

The announcement was made on Hollywood Reporter’s 2022 women in entertainment Breakfast Evening, presented by Lifetime, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, with Women in Entertainment Power 100 List.

Curtis and Monáe teamed up to kick off the scholarship awards ceremony, with Curtis announcing that Lifetime will award each graduating student a $10,000 scholarship to attend the school of their choice.

“Thanks to Casey Wasserman, Janelle and I have a little surprise for the Class of 2023. Most of you don’t know this, but I am Casey’s godmother. I adore Casey and his family, especially his grandmother and my Godmother Edie Wasserman,” Curtis said.

“Through the Wasserman Foundation, Casey created the Edie Wasserman Fund for Women in Hollywood, named after his grandmother, to support tenacious, promising young business and creative women like you in their educational and professional pursuits,” added Monáe .

Curtis and Monáe then announced that they would each be gifting an Apple MacBook Air, donated by the Wasserman Foundation and presented by TikTok star Addison Rae.

Next came “Scholarship Time,” Curtis announced, “Thanks to our donors, this year we are awarding $1 million in scholarships to Chapman University and Loyola Marymount University. Thanks to LMU’s Tim Snyder and Joanne Moore and Chapman’s Stephen Galloway made a college education more accessible to all.”

Best Buy offers full scholarships to Loyola Marymount University to WIE Mentor Program trainees. Additionally, Best Buy and the WIE Mentor Program are launching a new partnership that will continue to expand the program and give trainees access to its Los Angeles Community Impact Centers, a network of Best Buy teen tech centers that provide Vocational training opportunities in cutting-edge technology and the creative economy.

Curtis and Monáe announced that the 30th LMU Fellowship recipient is Melany, mentored by Netflix’s Racheline Benveniste.

Scholarships at Chapman University are underwritten by the Chuck Lorre Family Foundation and the California-Nevada National Association of Theater Owners. The 2022 WIE event marks the seventh year that the Chuck Lorre Family Foundation has provided full scholarships to graduates of the program. To date, Lorre’s Foundation has awarded more than $1.2 million in scholarships for the Mentoring Program.

Seun’s mentor, Curtis revealed, was Randi Matthews of Multi-Hyphen Media, who was the recipient of a Chuck Lorre Family Foundation Scholarship at Chapman University. The National Association of Theater Owners of Nevada, California also offered a scholarship to Chapman University for the first time, and Jasmine (mentor: Ann Murphy, CAA) announced the recipient of the scholarship.

Representing Paramount Pictures, Damian Chazelle’s Upcoming Film Stars Robbie Babylon, took the stage to introduce Chapman to one of this year’s WIE students who has received a four-year scholarship from the studio. The scholarship continues Paramount’s decades-long commitment to investing in educational opportunities for students in the Los Angeles area and underserved communities around the world.

When Robbie took the stage to announce the scholarship, she took a moment to admit how “excited and honored” she was among the trainees: “When I look at all of you faces, I see progress manifested. It fills me with joy.” , hope, and the drive to keep going. First and foremost, I see women who have the courage to be themselves.” Karen (mentor: Gabriela Zapata, Netflix) was announced as the recipient of the scholarship.

Abrams also attended the Spotify Fellowship. She took a moment to praise the trainees and encouraged, “What you see and how you share it matters, you matter. This morning matters because we all need beacons. You are our beacon. I represent Young women everywhere, just want to thank you. Thank you for the fierce and unyielding light that each and every one of you shines.”

Abrams then announced that Jazmine (mentor: Audrey Rowe, CAA) has received a Spotify Scholarship from Chapman University.

At the same time, Rae awarded the Sony Scholarship, marking the third year that Sony Pictures Entertainment has once again provided scholarships to LMU. “Education should be accessible to all, especially under-resourced children and young people. Strong role models can provide access and change lives, and this is hollywood reporter The Women in Entertainment Mentorship Program really does,” she said before announcing Elizabeth (mentor: WME’s Marie Sheehy) as the recipient.

Lifetime has been a partner in the Women in Entertainment Mentorship Program since its inception and is a major contributor to its general scholarship fund, ensuring each mentee receives a $10,000 scholarship to attend the college of their choice. This year, A+E Studios, the award-winning studio unit of Lifetime’s parent company, A+E Networks, produced a short film highlighting the mentorship program that premiered at the event.

Women in Entertainment is presented by Lifetime, which has contributed more than $1 million to support the program over the past seven years. The evening is sponsored by Best Buy, Cadillac, Spotify, eOne, FIJI, Gersh and SAG-AFTRA, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, Chapman University, College Access Partnership and Loyola Marymount University.
