Jennifer Lopez wants Ben Affleck to be her children’s “ally”.
The “Jenny on the Block” producer married the 50-year-old actor-director earlier this year, and while she admits that blending their families was a “process,” she ultimately hopes to bring up her and her ex-husband with a fresh perspective Mark Anthony’s 14-year-old twins Max and Emme are from her spouse’s marriage with children Violet, 16, Seraphina, 12, and 10-year-old Samuel and Jennifer Garner.
“The transition is a process that needs to be handled very carefully,” she said.
“They have a lot of feelings. They’re teenagers. But so far it’s going very well. What I hope to nurture with my family is that his child has a new ally in me and my child has a new ally in him. An ally, someone who really loves and cares about them but can have a different perspective and help me see what I can see. Don’t watch it with my kids because my feelings are so strained.”
Now that the twins are getting older and they are looking for independence, even if Jennifer is “hurt” when they want to go out without her, she can understand why they want to hang out with friends and stay away from her frequent presence spotlight.
She told US Vogue: “The other day, one of my kids said, ‘I want to go to the flea market.’ I was like, ‘Oh, do you want me and Ben? “They said, “You know, Mom, that’s what happened when you went. “It hurts my feelings. I get it.
“When they’re not being watched, followed and photographed, they want to be with their friends. It’s one thing. No one complains, but it’s one thing.”
The 53-year-old star wants her kids to be “warriors,” but she knows they’ll grow up with more privilege than her age.
She said: “It’s hard, in its own way, when you don’t have to fight for things because then you don’t learn how to be a fighter.
“I had to learn how to be a fighter. I wanted to give them a life I didn’t have, but they didn’t experience the same rewarding things, and it was developing that survivalist mentality.”
