When I say cost-effective, it costs more to put prisoners in jail than to educate them in college. I will point to my journey and say that during the nine months I was held in Detroit, Wayne County, the state and taxpayers paid $25,000.
By God’s grace and determination, I went to college a year later. At the time I had no parents and no way to fund education, so taxpayers had to fund it through grants and loans. For $6,000 a year, I can get my undergraduate degree at Eastern Michigan University, a major regional university. So college pays $6,000 a year and jail costs $25,000. Of course, I’m no longer a street kid and people are safer. For millions, we will have a safer community and country.

Briefly talk about some of your accolades – the daytime Emmys and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. What does that feel like?
Professionally, this is definitely the pinnacle of my career, and I’ve had the highest level of success in my career as a daytime TV personality. This is very important to me and it means a lot. This is significant because it also validates the work I’m trying to do, which is to change the lives of others. My commitment is always how much my life has changed, and that’s how I measure success.
Can you think of the most moving case over the years?
Yes, it’s the most prominent, it’s been over a decade, but it’s still so true. A young man who escaped from a street gang in Los Angeles moved to the Bay Area with his aunt after his parents died from HIV/AIDS; they both came from intravenous drug use. He tried to change his life. He got there, in my court, his aunt’s husband, uncle threw his stuff out of the house while he lived there because this 20-year-old man came in after midnight and broke what he called a curfew.
I asked my uncle why he was so harsh on this young man because he was trying to change his life, and I said, “This is your nephew, you should help him.” The uncle continued, “He is nothing to me. I No responsibility for him. He needs to go to jail.”

Please remove the word “accept”. You don’t need to be accepted, you need to be embraced and loved. I am with you. My son is a member of the LGBTQ community and he is gay. The word is used a lot, so we had challenges over the years, but we embraced and fell in love with him from day one.

How do you feel seeing all the gun violence happening in this country?
Well, first we have to find the root cause. I knew right away that we needed some comfort. In my opinion, this immediate relief should focus on targeting gun-wielding criminals and those mentally ill with guns. These are laws that need to be revisited or strengthened without violating the Second Amendment. I think it’s taking guns from criminals. Over the past two years, gun ownership has increased by 20 percent, while murders have increased by 20 percent or slightly more.

Matisse family matters is a family documentary that allows us to give an example of a family led by love. Each of our family members faces personal challenges in their lives that they constantly strive to overcome.
While we are a successful family, all of my children are professionals, two are attorneys, one is a producer for many years, and the other is a senior advisor to U.S. Senator Mark Warner. They all have their own challenges. My son who works in the U.S. Senate is an LGBTQ member who faces challenges against discrimination in the field.
