The battle for control of the U.S. Congress is starting to take shape as votes are counted in competitive contests across the country. Republicans ousted Democrats in the House of Representatives in Florida, Georgia and Virginia. While several Democratic incumbents, including two members of the Virginia House of Representatives, have won, others are leading the way.

As votes continue to be counted in key races, here are some key points:
1. Three Democratic-controlled House races in Virginia are widely seen as early warning signs. Democrats hold seats in two Virginia districts that Biden won in 2020. CNN expects Democrat Jennifer Wexton to win re-election in Virginia’s 10th District, and Representative Abigail Spanberg in Virginia’s 7th District. But CNN said Democrats lost in southeastern Virginia.
2. CNN expects Luria, a member of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, to lose her Virginia Beach House seat.
3. New Hampshire was a key early outcome of the battle for control of the Senate, and Democrats couldn’t afford to lose a seat to keep their majority. Senator Maggie Hassan is a first-term Democrat facing a retired Army brigadier general. CNN expects General Don Bolduc to win her game.
4. Gov. Ron DeSantis has a Republican lead in Florida — a historic victory over Democrat Charlie Crist in Democratic territory.
