Purpose of work
Associate Dean for Research at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), Khalifa University, providing overall executive leadership and policy development and implementation for many medical student administrative and support functions, including admissions and recruitment, grades and records, student organizations and interests Groups, activities and events, student health and wellness, and career counseling services.
Key Roles and Responsibilities

- Contributes to the development of CMHS’ strategy, as well as annual academic and administrative research plans.
- Contribute to the development of CMHS’ policies and procedures, uphold the overall goals of Khalifa University, ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards, and promote leading practice and educational excellence.
- Participate in the formulation and management of departmental budgets; monitor budget implementation and report in a timely manner to ensure that differences are resolved in a timely manner.
- Manage and direct departmental staff
Operational Responsibilities
Lead development and maintenance of CMHS education programs:
- Provide leadership to the CMHS Office of Research
- Support the CMHS certification process and its continuous quality improvement plan
- Work with the Dean, Associate Deans, and faculty to plan, develop, implement, evaluate, and improve courses, programs, and services that support the College’s mission
- Ensuring that medical student programs and services comply with United Arab Emirates laws, regulations and policies
Research
- Collaborate with Khalifa University’s Senior Vice President for Research and Development to develop and refine a research strategy and contribute to the development and implementation of an overall research strategy and plan to achieve the University’s vision and objectives.
- Oversee the successful implementation and management of the CMHS Research Center
- Manage, enhance and grow CMHS research activities and overall impact through the development of knowledge, human capital and technological solutions.
- Ensure that all research proposals comply with University policies, procedures and applicable regulations.
- Monitor the quality of award-winning research and provide mechanisms for improvement.
- Facilitate and support students’ research activities in collaboration with the Dean, Associate Dean and Khalifa University’s Research Support Office
- Support and mentor office staff involved in research
Administration and Personnel Management
- In consultation with the Dean and Associate Deans, actively collaborate with the Office of Human Resources to recruit and retain high-quality faculty and staff for the Office.
- Manage faculty by defining job expectations; plan, monitor, and evaluate faculty performance; coach, consult, and actively participate in the induction, mentoring, and professional development of departmental staff.
- Scheduling and distributing the workload of faculty and staff so as to participate appropriately in the academic, clinical, research and service activities of the Faculty.
- Communicates College and University strategic objectives and new policy developments to departmental staff.
- Recommend promotions, salary adjustments, and other personnel actions to the Dean and Associate Deans.
- Provide information or prepare reports when required.
General
- Ensure compliance with University information security policies and procedures and report breaches or other security risks accordingly.
- Ensures coordination with other departments to facilitate completion of tasks and responsibilities as required.
- Perform any other tasks assigned by the Dean and his line manager.
Supervisory duties
- Provides coaching, coaching, and mentoring as needed to enhance the capabilities within the team and ensure the achievement of stated goals and plans.
- Based on pre-determined training needs, recommend suitable training courses, evaluate their effectiveness, and monitor their results.
- Conducts performance evaluations of subordinates against planned timelines and recommends necessary actions based on applied practice.
- Hold regular meetings with subordinates to ensure priorities are clear and workflow is running smoothly.
- Follow up on employee administrative matters such as leave, leaves of absence and other administrative and related matters.

- MD and/or PhD in a relevant field of study
- Qualifications for appointment as associate professor or above
- Completion of at least seven years of relevant academic experience, with at least two years in an administrative academic position.

- Associate or full professor with at least 8 years of responsible education-related experience leading and successfully managing university education programs, including 5 years of teaching experience at the associate or full professor level in higher education.
- A strong record reflects excellence in education, clinical practice and/or research.
- Proven management experience, the expertise required to work with faculty and medical professionals, strong people skills and a solid understanding of University structure and culture are essential.
- Demonstrable ethical behavior, professionalism, interpersonal skills, leadership and management skills sufficient to effectively instruct and develop staff and students.
- Familiarity or experience with Middle Eastern educational institutions will be favored.
