Johan Meens broke through the Côte des Forges with 2 minutes and 40 seconds ahead of the peloton.

After finishing second in the Amstel Gold Race, Ben Healy came out today with legitimate ambition. “I had a great couple of days after Amstel, I’m fit and ready to play today. The reaction was crazy. It’s only when you get good results in the games that you realize how big these games are, So I’ve “been blown away,” Healy said at the start.

“It’s the first time I’ve played this race in this format. Mur de Huy is a good climb for me, but we have cards to play with the team. The first two times Pogacar played here, he just To be in the top 10. I think he wanted an aggressive game today and that might work in our favor.”

The break was on the Côte de Trasenster, still 2 minutes 20 seconds ahead of the UAE. Next on the agenda will be the Côte des Forges (1.3 km, 7.3%).

On Herve’s start, Tadej Pogacar played down the potential impact of his efforts at Amstel: “Sunday’s race is important, but I think the drivers here are more or less the same as those at Amstel, so we Both have two days to recover.” Meanwhile, when asked about the possibility of attacking from distance, Pogacar said: “We’ll see, it all depends on after the first and second Mur de Huy. situation, but usually Mur’s sprint end.” His record in the Mur de Huy sprint was unremarkable, but he showed the confidence to try and emerge from such a situation. “If I’m in a good position, then I think it’s possible to get a good result,” he said.

Bol made it through, giving the eight-man team a two-minute lead over the peloton. An early rupture has formed without much struggle, but it will be interesting to see how long this detente lasts. The Amstel Gold Medal break was also quickly over, but then UAE picked up the pace and they were swept away with 100km to go, quickly forming a winning move.

Reinforcements may indeed come in the form of an interesting counterattack group, led by Soren Kragh Andersen (Alpecin-Deceuninck). The Danes have attracted Johan Meens (Bingoal WB), Daryl Impey (Israel-PremierTech), Oliver Naesen (Ag2r-Citröen), Georg Zimmermann (Intermarche-Circus-Wanty) and Raul Garcia Pierna (Equipo Kern Pharma).

Jacob Hindsgaul (Uno-X) attacks and pulls a small gap above the peloton. The Danes would like to have some companies in this area.

Bingoal WB is active, which is usually a quick start to a lawsuit, but so far none of the breakouts have gained any traction.

Michael Woods (Israel’s Premier Tech), who finished third in 2020, will be highly regarded in a traditional hard-hitting match against Mur de Huy, but the Canadian, like everyone else, is also mindful of the Pogacar factor. “I do think this year might be the year we can’t finish Mur as a team,” he said. “Pogacar rode so well, I could have seen it earlier. So I think the key is to stay vigilant and not get caught.”

The peloton has already rolled out of Herve and the 2023 Flèche Wallonne is underway. For years, the game was essentially a high-speed parade at the feet of Mur de Huy, with Alejandro Valverde and/or Julian Alaphilippe dutifully repeating last year’s lines. With so many absentees — Marc Hirschi is the only past winner in the field — plus Pogacar’s presence, there’s a sense that this year’s race could be — possible – Play a little differently.

The drivers have just completed their signings at Herve, and there are two notable absences from the starting roster. Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R La Mondiale) are both ruled out due to illness.read more here.

The peloton started from Herve at 11:45 CET and the race was scheduled to reach kilometer zero at 11:50 after a short neutralization section.

Flèche Wallonne’s route follows a familiar format. After starting from Herve, the peloton tackled the Côte de Trasenster and the Côte de Forges before heading to the heart of the race, namely three laps on the Côte d’Ereffe (2.1km, 5%), the Côte de la Cherave (1.3km, 8.1 %) and Mur de Huy (1.3 km, 9.6%). Since 1985, the famous climb has been the finish line of the Flèche Wallonne. The configuration change, at least according to popular lore, was to take into account local favorite Claude Criquielion, the then world champion officially becoming the first Flèche champion to climb the infamous crag.

Tadej Pogačar has beaten all competitors this year with 11 victories including Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race and Paris-Nice. He beat the likes of Jonas Vingegaard, Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert. His momentum seemed unstoppable when the Ardennes Classic came into view.

Today, however, he reacquainted himself with one of the few opponents he never beat: Mur de Huy. In the first three races at Flèche Wallonne, Pogačar had to succumb to positions 9, 12 and 53. He’ll be looking to improve that record considerably here. The question, of course, is how will he do it? It seems like anything is possible.

After all, it has been 20 years since Flèche Wallonne’s winning move was last won before the Mur de Huy. Could this be the year the sequence is broken?
