With all the changes to the rules and regulations for entering the capital, updates are necessary in order to balance safety and normalcy in the capital, and it is important to keep yourself up to date with the latest requirements and restrictions.
This guide aims to briefly explain the most important rules for entering Abu Dhabi and public places in the emirate.
Your starting point should really be the Alhosn Green Pass.
Wear a mask in public
Beginning Wednesday, September 28, 2022, the requirement to wear masks in most indoor spaces will be lifted. The rule on wearing masks outdoors was lifted in February.
In the UAE, people are still required to wear masks when taking public transport, going to mosques or in medical settings. Food service providers and suspected Covid-19 cases will also be required to continue to wear masks.

However, in all other indoor settings, including schools, hotels and malls, masks will be optional starting Wednesday. This is good news for parents with schoolchildren, who are still required to wear masks while indoors in class and between classes.
Events and airlines will have the power to decide whether to implement mask requirements during their operations. Abu Dhabi has a packed schedule of indoor and outdoor events in the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023 – so questions remain as to whether masks will be required during these festivities.
What is an Alhosn Green Pass?
The Alhosn Green Pass is essentially a traffic light app that shows your current Covid-19 test and vaccination status, just like wearing a mask, it is very important for travelling to public places in Abu Dhabi.
It’s free and available from apple, google play, Samsung Store and application library. The app has many features, but its main function is to store your vaccination data (residents vaccinated in the UAE should load their information automatically, tourists vaccinated overseas should upload their certificate to the system following the guidelines below), and displays any recent PCR tests associated with your account.
For residents, the Alhosn app will require your Emirates ID number. Visitors need to use the UID number on the visa (more information below).

After the update, your app’s main profile will display a QR code and a status with one of three colors: green, gray, and red. Green indicates that you recently had a PCR test and you are free to visit Abu Dhabi’s sights, shops, restaurants, malls and events at your leisure.
In the past, green passes on the Alhosn app were only available to people who were fully vaccinated (including the third booster shot), but as of March 24, 2022, green passes are available to everyone regardless of vaccination status. Although your Covid vaccine coverage will determine the validity of your green pass. More on that below.

Gray is neutral, which means you didn’t have a negative PCR test within the time it takes to turn green. To turn green, you just need to go out and get the PCR results.
Red means you are Covid positive, if you are over 50, have relatively severe symptoms, have a chronic medical condition or are pregnant – you have been directed to one of the main assessment centres for a medical examination and quarantine instructions.
Others: You are advised to re-test at any health centre in the emirate and continue to isolate. If this test is positive, a specialist will contact you to advise on isolation procedures.
How long does the green pass last?
As of September 28, 2022, those who have been fully vaccinated (i.e. received two doses of the vaccine and a booster shot six months after receiving the second dose) – Green card status is valid for 30 days from PCR Tested negative.
Those with a positive, doctor-approved waiver will also maintain a valid green pass status for 30 days after a negative PCR test.
Note that your vaccine needs to be reflected in the Alhosn app to achieve this status.
People who have recently recovered from Covid – 11 days after receiving a positive test, you will receive a green pass valid for 30 days. After that, a negative PCR test will be required for a follow-up Green Pass window of 30 days.
As of September 28, 2022, unvaccinated or partially vaccinated individuals can receive a 7-day green pass with a negative PCR test result.
Children under the age of 16 do not need a PCR test.
What about tourists?
So if you’re a tourist to Abu Dhabi, it still makes sense to download the Alhosn app, especially if you’re vaccinated.
but follow a update rules On March 17, unvaccinated individuals and those without an Alhosn Green Pass can now obtain a negative PCR test within 48 hours to visit “Abu Dhabi’s activities, attractions and cultural sites”.

What are the current entry rules in Abu Dhabi?
Entering Abu Dhabi by road
From Saturday 26 February 2022, you do not need to present an Alhosn Green Pass or negative PCR to enter Abu Dhabi.
The requirement to scan through the EDE has also been removed from the boundary.
Notwithstanding the above, a green pass is still required to enter public spaces in Abu Dhabi. This includes shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, gyms, parks and beaches.
Entering Abu Dhabi by Air
Since February 26, Abu Dhabi has completely scrapped its Green List system and required quarantine of unvaccinated passengers from non-Green List countries.
From March 7, passengers arriving in Abu Dhabi will also no longer be required to undergo a PCR test on arrival. It is now optional and costs AED 40.
Fully vaccinated travelers
Those who are fully vaccinated (using UAE-approved vaccines) or who have a 30-day recovery certificate with QR, do not need a PCR test before arriving in Abu Dhabi.
unvaccinated travelers
Anyone travelling to Abu Dhabi who is not fully vaccinated must present a negative PCR test obtained within 48 hours before departure or a QR code proof of recovery from Covid-19 within 30 days of departure.
Fly out of or in transit from Abu Dhabi
The update also means that it is no longer necessary to obtain a negative PCR to board a flight from Abu Dhabi, or if you are connecting via AUH. While it is important to check the entry requirements of your destination, PCR may be required in advance.
How tourists can prove they have been vaccinated
The Alhosn app, which provides a portal to almost all public spaces in Abu Dhabi, has just received a new update that will make it easier for tourists wishing to visit the emirate.
The new feature will allow tourists to download the app and register in advance, using their passport number, rather than having to wait for the UID number issued as part of their visa (as was the case before this latest change).more details Check out our guide.
Vaccine certificates will be essential for those wishing to enter the UAE under these updated rules.Visitors must register their documents at ICA website Five days before departure date. We recommend doing this on the desktop site, as the reports are more functional.
As a first step, download the ICA application and fill out the form under the “Registration to Arrive” section. Here you can upload your vaccination certificate and when it is done you will receive a text message with a link to download the Alhosn app. You need to use the same phone number on the ICA app as on the Alhosn app – we recommend you use a UAE SIM card (you can change your registered phone number registered to ICA via the ICA app).
Next you will need a UID number, which can be found at the airport or via ICA website. This is essential for setting up your profile on the Alhosn app. You will need to link your phone number to your Alhosn account (the same one you use for ICA).
