Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday night to the biggest and thunderous standing ovation yet. Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone star in this 3-hour, 26-minute epic about greed, racism and a dark and largely unexplored chapter in American history. This got the crowd so ecstatic that they jumped to their feet and started clapping for nine minutes after the credits ended and the lights went up.
Cannes clearly loves Scorsese, returning to the festival for the first time since 1985’s “After Hours,” bringing it to the south of France. That’s good news for Apple Original Films, which is said to have given the director a $200 million budget to realize his vision in hopes of completing one of his signature explorations of crime. However, many of these films unfold on the barren streets of New York. The film is set in northeastern Oklahoma, where members of the Osage Nation are systematically murdered for sinister purposes.

DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Gladstone and Jesse Plemons walked the red carpet ahead of the premiere, braving rain and cloud to inject some fiery glamor into the night. Gladstone, who plays the Osage woman targeted by her greedy husband for her oil wealth, earned rave reviews and fought back tears as the audience cheered loudly at the premiere. On social media, Oscar bloggers are already using her performance to draw attention to possible awards.
After the film ended with applause, Scorsese picked up the microphone to address the crowd. “Thank you Osage family,” he said. “Everyone is related to the picture. My old friends Bob and Leo, and Jesse and Lily. We had this picture taken a few years ago in Oklahoma. Time to turn around, but Apple did a great job with us.” Well. There was a lot of grass. I’m from New York. I was amazed. It was an amazing experience. We live in that world.”
The applause could have lasted longer if filmmakers hadn’t been asked to address packed theaters. Scorsese kept saying “thank you” as the crowd continued to cheer. He seemed energized by the response, though he also made it clear that he didn’t like having the camera linger on him (a danger at Cannes, where the every move of the A-list stars in attendance is captured for posterity). By Scorsese’s side, the actors playing the Osage members wiped their eyes and got emotional.
The movie was 45 minutes late, but the palace crowd seemed unimpressed. After all, Killers of the Flower Moon was the festival’s most anticipated film, its biggest box office hit, and one of those moments when Hollywood sends its brightest minds to the south of France to celebrate the art (and sparkle) of filmmaking. There are also big names among movie stars. Apple CEO Tim Cook appeared at the Cannes Film Festival to support the company’s foray into filmmaking. When the movie started, the crowd burst into applause as Apple’s banner flashed across the screen, in stark contrast to the reaction to the press screening (more on that later).
Elsewhere on the Croisette, the chaos at Cannes continued at the 4:30 p.m. Line up to Club Maritime, located behind the festival’s central hub. Journalists who arrived at the screening an hour early were forced to wait outside, huddled in the pouring rain. Ten minutes before the screening was scheduled to start, the doors opened and people scrambled to get into the theater, sparking a frenzied scramble. The movie was 15 minutes late when the auditorium was full (it’s unclear if everyone in line was there) and the lights were dimmed.
However, the festival’s uncharacteristically late arrivals did not dampen the mood inside the cinema, with the media occupying nearly every seat in the 1,068-seat theater and erupting in raucous cheers as the film began. While the Apple TV+ sign drew some boos, one brave member of the media yelled, “Hey! They paid for this!”
Overall, De Niro and DiCaprio’s surprisingly comedic performances, especially the scene where De Niro hits DiCaprio with a paddle in the abandoned Mason cabin, are well received throughout the film. Warm welcome and laughter. Gladstone appears to have stolen film from two vets. “She’s amazing,” one attendee enthused about her performance in a pivotal moment near the film’s end.
Based on David Grann’s 2017 book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, Scorsese’s latest is set in 1920s Oklahoma with a focus on Osage A series of murders by strange peoples. The newly formed FBI arrives to investigate and uncover a sinister operation. The supporting cast includes Brendan Fraser and John Lithgow (Scorsese also makes a cameo, to rapturous applause).
Notably, “Flower Moon” marks the first time Oscar-winners DiCaprio and De Niro have teamed up in a feature film since Michael Caton-Jones’ 1993 drama “A Boy’s Life.” Both actors played fictional versions of themselves in Scorsese’s short film, “The Audition.” De Niro was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his roles in Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver,” “Cape Fear” and “Raging Bull,” winning for the latter. DiCaprio was nominated for an Oscar for Scorsese’s The Aviator and The Wolf of Wall Street. “Flower Moon” marks the first time all three collaborators have worked together on a film.
Scorsese worked closely with the Osage Nation during the production of The Flower Moon, with Osage Nation patriarch Jeffrey Standingbear as an advisor.Gladstone Tell type The Osage nation played a huge role in shaping Scorsese’s original plan for the film.
“Work is better when you let the world inform the work,” Gladstone said. “It’s very refreshing to make and [Osage Nation] Community. As the community has grown more enthusiastic about our presence, so has the community’s engagement with the film.this is a different movie than that one [Scorsese] Walking in and making it was almost entirely because the community had to say how it was made and what was being portrayed. “
Apple and Paramount will release “Killers of the Flower Moon” in theaters on October 20. It will then debut on Apple’s streaming service at an unspecified date.
Killers of the Flower Moon did not compete at Cannes and was therefore ineligible for the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or. Scorsese won the Palme d’Or for “Taxi Driver” and the director award at Cannes for “After Hours.”
