More performances are expected to be announced in the coming weeks for the station’s flagship music event, which changes locations around the UK each year.

With an event scheduled for 2020 canceled due to the Covid pandemic, the festival will return triumphantly to Dundee’s Camperdown Park for 2023 and will take place over the bank holiday weekend of May 26-28 with an expected attendance of 80,000 people .

Scottish singer Capaldi said: “I’m really excited to be in Dundee for the big weekend, last time I couldn’t get a ticket so I’m just happy to come and enjoy the game and the competition.”

Horan added: “I can’t wait to kick off the festive season at Radio 1’s big weekend 2023 at Dundee. See you then!”

Parks said: “Can’t wait for the big weekend this year! What a joy to be performing for you guys in Scotland.”

Radio host James said he was delighted that Dundee had been given a second chance to host the festival.

He said: “Due to the pandemic we were sad not to be in Dundee, so it’s very exciting to finally deliver on our commitment this year.

“I holidayed near Dundee in the summer and decided to move there, so a big weekend nearby was just the first part of my crafty plan to get out of London. I’m so glad Radio 1 fell in love with it.”

John Alexander, leader of Dundee City Council, added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Dundee and we look forward to hosting such an exciting event at Camperdown Park following the disappointing cancellations in 2020.

“Radio 1’s big weekend not only showcases Dundee to the tens of thousands of attendees, but also to the millions who tune in and listen via the BBC. We expect the region’s economy to get a huge boost as the event Worth millions of pounds to former host locations.”
