‘Little Mermaid’ calls for ‘whitewashing slavery’

little mermaid Under fire for allegedly “whitewashing” slavery in film.

according to new york post, Prominent British campaigner Marcus Ryder hailed Halle Bailey as Ariel, but he slammed Disney’s Little Mermaid, Caribbean slavery and the whitewashing of slavery in the blog Tell the Kids the Truth.

Ryder claims the film is set in the 18th-century Caribbean, when African slavery was rampant in the region.

However, he added that the islanders in the film were apparently unaffected.

“In this case, I don’t think we do our children any good by pretending that slavery didn’t exist,” he wrote. “To me, Disney’s penchant for trying to make inconvenient truths disappear says more about the creativity of adults than it does about children’s ability to work.”

Ryder also embraced the film’s fantasy genre, rather than being based on historical events.

However, he said Disney should not “encourage historical amnesia.”

“But it is dangerous to completely erase and rewrite one of the most painful and important parts of the history of the African diaspora, especially when it is unquestionably consumed by children,” he said.
