Abu Dhabi. KAZINFORM As part of its rich cultural season 2022-2023, Louvre Abu Dhabi has announced that its upcoming exhibition “Bollywood Superstars: Short Stories from Indian Cinema” will open on January 24 and will open in June 2023. 4 days end.
Organized in collaboration with the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac and the Musée de France, the exhibition will showcase the depth and richness of the art and civilization of the Indian subcontinent through its long tradition of image-making and the diversity of Indian filmmaking, Wan reports.
Through more than 80 artworks, including photographs, textiles, graphic art, costumes and more than 30 film clips, the exhibition explores the rich history of Indian cinema from its beginnings in the late 19th century to the present. The artworks are from Louvre Abu Dhabi, Branly Quay Museum – Jacques Chirac, French Military Museum, Asian National Art Museum – Guimet, Shabah Collection, Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation and Priya Paul Collection.
The exhibition is co-curated by Julien Rousseau and Hélène Kessous, Doctor of Social Anthropology and Ethnology, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Curator and Head of Asian Collections, Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, with the support of Dr. Abu Souraya Noujaim, Director of Science, Curatorial and Collection Management, Zabi Louvre.
As the world’s leading film producer, India currently produces more than 1,500 films a year in nearly 20 languages, which are exported across Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Through Bollywood superstars, museum visitors will learn how Indian pioneers used emerging imaging technologies such as lithography and photography to embark on a journey from the first movie to the grand musical. Visitors will gain a deeper understanding of Bollywood’s international success and appreciate the diversity of Indian cinema. Comprehensive exhibitions cover the history of Indian cinema, from storytelling, dance and pre-film to religious and mythological influences and the rise of Bollywood superstars.

Highlights of the exhibition include artworks from the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s collection, such as a page from the Harivamsa series: Krishna and His Courtiers by the Sea of Pandaraka (c.1820, Kangra, India); and plate armor known as the “Four Mirrors” armor (c.1600-1800, Mughals, India); and Krishna surrounded by gopis (c.1655, Rajasthan, India). Highlights on loan from partner museums include a figurine of Krishna playing the flute as a child from the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac (second half of the 19th century, Rajasthan, India); a dagger from the collection of al-Sabah (17th century Late period, Kuwait); Indian armor (18th century), from Musée de l’armée; a coat (19th century), from Musée national des arts asiatiques-Guimet. Film buffs will especially enjoy screenings of several iconic film clips that have left an indelible mark on Indian cinema history.
