Movie: Battle of Britain

The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History at 503 East Ninth Street in Little Rock screened the documentary Thirteen Hours to Save Britain It’s part of the “MacArthur Movie” series today at 6:30pm. The film tells the beginning of the Battle of Britain on September 15, 1940, a bloody contest entirely over Britain that resulted in Hitler’s first major defeat. Arkansas Central Library System Grant Booker Watson Literary Prize 2022 Kenneth C. Barnes, professor emeritus of history at the University of Central Arkansas, was awarded for his book “The Ku Klux Klan in Arkansas in the 1920s” (University of Arkansas Press). According to a press release from the library system, the award includes a $2,000 stipend awarded annually to “the best work, whether fiction or non-fiction, by an author living in Arkansas.”

The book focuses on the broad impact of the Klan on the entire state during much of the 1920s. It also earned Barnes the 2022 JG Ragsdale Book Award from the Arkansas Historical Society for the best book-length study of Arkansas history.

This is Barnes’ second Watson Award; the library system also honored him in 2017 for “Anti-Catholicism in Arkansas: How Politicians, Press, Ku Klux Klan, and Religious Leaders Imagine Enemies.” The award was established in 1999 in honor of banker William Booker Worthen, who served 22 years on the Library System Board of Directors.
