MACOA plans full entertainment season | local

From the Beach Boys tribute concert to Junie B. Jones’ essential school survival guide, the Mining Arts Council (MACOA) will “bring it to the park” during its 2022-2023 season.

Since becoming a non-profit community arts organization in 1990, MACOA has brought quality arts and cultural events to the region. The 2022-2023 season is no exception. The lineup offers performers from New York, Nashville and St. Louis to events in our area, as well as something for everyone.

The MACOA season will kick off with a fantastic Beach Boys tribute concert by Nashville-based Sail On at the Centene Center. Co-sponsored by the City of Farmington, the concert will take place on October 8th at 7pm. Sail On will transport audiences to the waves and sands of the 1960s and 70s. Listen to your favorite Beach Boy tunes like “Good Vibrations,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” and “Little Deuce Coupe.” Tickets are $15 and are available now at the Farmington Civic Center at 2 Black Knight Drive or by calling 573-756-0900.

James Bond fans and music fans alike will be in for a spectacular concert at the Centene Centre on Saturday, October 22nd at 7pm. Shaken, Not Stirred is a concert from the James Bond film, choreographed and directed by Dr. Kevin White, that will turn the Mineral District Academy of Fine Arts community band into a “pop band”. In addition to the well-known 007 instrumental theme song, the special lead singer will perform “Diamonds Are Forever”, “The Look of Love”, “Skyfall”, “Thunderball” and other billboard charts with the accompaniment of the orchestra. Tickets are $15 and go on sale August 22 at the Civic Center.

December will bring New York City to Park Hills. Ezekiel Andrew performs at The Lion King on Broadway in November 2021. Since then, he has played the role of Mufasa several times as a substitute. The powerful baritone from Mississippi will perform at the Park Hills Mineral Area College Theater on December 6th at 6pm. Come and experience a proud traditional concert of jazz, musicals and hymns.

MACOA and the City of Farmington also announced that New York’s TheaterWorks USA children’s theater company will be returning after a travel hiatus. Bring the whole family to the Centene Center on February 25th at 2 p.m. as the group bring popular character Junie B. Jones to life in the musical Junie B.’s Essential Survival Guide to School.

For something completely different, Ed Reggi and the Paper Slip Theater in St. Louis come to the Mines District College Theater on March 25 at 7 p.m. for a hilarious comedy show called “Whoever Laughs.” The TV show “Whose Words Are These.” Quick thinking, wit, acting and musical flair combined with audience interaction and engagement make this a fun, family-friendly night of entertainment.

The 2022-2023 season is full of art and entertainment that no one wants to miss. In addition to these great events, don’t forget the 9th ART Blooms Banner Contest, the 23rd K-12 Art Show, the 3rd Creative Writing Contest and Workshop, and the 2nd Local Heroes’ Brave Is Beautiful Photo Exhibition.
