A heated exchange between MSNBC host Rachel Maddow and blogger Max Blumenthal has taken the internet by storm. The event took place during Maddow’s keynote address at Trucon 2023 in Washington, DC on June 2. Blumenthal, known for his controversial views and ties to pro-Russian propaganda, seized the opportunity to challenge Maddow’s reporting on the Steele dossier and the alleged Russian bounty.

As Maddow addressed the audience, Blumenthal approached the stage, accusing her of promoting the infamous Steele dossier, which claimed ties between former President Donald Trump and the Kremlin. He also blasted her for reporting on Russian bounties paid to Taliban leaders, a claim U.S. intelligence later said had no conclusive evidence. The confrontation quickly escalates as Blumenthal questions Maddow’s responsibility for perpetuating what he believes to be a lie.
The video of the tense encounter has gone viral, garnering over 1.3 million views and over 14,700 likes since posting. Maddow’s reaction, while calm, showed that she disapproved of Blumenthal’s actions. The crowd expressed their mixed emotions, with some whining and boos among them.

Blumenthal’s controversial online presence has drawn attention for his contributions to The Grayzone, a website accused of promoting pro-Russian narratives and content sympathetic to the authoritarian regime. He has also appeared on Russian state-owned news outlets RT and Sputnik. Those affiliations further fueled heated exchanges between Blumenthal and Maddow, with Blumenthal calling her speech “boring and paranoid.”
Interestingly, Blumenthal didn’t stop fighting Maddow. In another video from the same event, he spoke to a panel about the bombing campaign by Trucon’s sponsor, Lockheed Martin. He questioned whether non-binary U.S. Navy divers were responsible for the Nord Stream pipeline explosion, which remains shrouded in mystery.
Critics have accused journalistic practices of questionable gray areas, with Bellingcat founder Elliot Higgins questioning the credibility of an article on the site. Blumenthal’s media has also been criticized for downplaying China’s alleged human rights violations against the Uighur minority, despite reports from Human Rights Watch and others.
