NEW YORK – The United Arab Emirates has called for enriching the dialogue on peace and security by focusing African experiences at the UN Security Council meeting on African peacekeeping. The open debate took place in August, when China is the presidency of the Security Council.
“Since its inception, the UAE has steadily expanded its relationships with partners on the African continent,” said Ambassador Mohammad Abu Shahab, Deputy Permanent Representative and Chargé d’affaires of the UAE to the United Nations. He added that the dialogue on international peace and security would benefit from focusing on the African continent’s experience. “Today, our partnership is thriving, with dynamic collaboration in key areas such as renewable energy, food security, counter-terrorism and public health.”
Ambassador Abushahab also stressed the need for locally appropriate approaches to effectively maintain peace in Africa and elsewhere. “While our current focus may be on African challenges, we must remember how often their origins and impacts extend beyond the continent. Likewise, the Council must recognize that African solutions, not just challenges, have a global dimension.”
In his speech, Ambassador Abu Shahab further emphasized that sustainable peace also means sustainable development. He stressed that protecting and ensuring access to essential goods and services, as well as stabilizing food and energy prices, must be at the heart of any peacekeeping effort.
