March Husky He led the UAE Chiefs home to a 2-1 draw at the Veneto Classic and completed a day of domination for his side.

Hirschi came out of the trio in the final 10km of Sunday’s multi-faceted Italian race, beating teammate Davide Formolo and Alpecin-Deceuninck driver Nicola Conci for his fourth victory of the season.

Emirates, Alpecin-Deecuninck and Lotto-Soudal dominated the final stage of the Vicenza race, which saw some dirt and pebbles on the 190km track.

Hirschi’s victory was shaped by a valiant descent on the last tough ascent of the day.

The Swiss narrowly led Formolo and Conci on the winding downhill and held on to a 10-second victory in Bassano del Grappa. Hirschi’s UAE team has four drivers in the top 10.

The victory brings the UAE – home to Tadej Pogačar, João Almeida, Brandon McNulty and Matteo Trentin, who won the Giro del Veneto on Wednesday – to 48 wins this season, matched only by Jumbo-Visma.

“I love the racetrack,” Husky said after taking the podium. “The climbs and gravel races are really fun, but I can make a difference on the downhills, it’s technical.”

Hirschi looked to be widened on the decisive final hill before climbing back to the top in time to launch his winning downhill attack.

“I did the climb in training and knew it was a long climb. I tried to stand on the side of the gravel so I could save energy and then I went back to the top and went straight to the front. Once they committed a Small mistakes, I can get past that,” he said. “I had a gap and luckily it was enough.”

Four wins in 2022 put Hirschi back in the winner’s circle after a season of illness and hip issues in 2021.

The 24-year-old broke through in his final year with Sunweb in 2020, but faded out of the limelight in his debut season in the Emirates. Hirschi now ends his 2022 like he started – in front of the winner’s photo.

“I’m looking forward to next year,” he said. “This year has been tough. I had surgery in January, so I started late. I hope to have a good winter and come back next year at the same level as now.”
