Carey Mulligan is “totally picky” on Marcus Mumford’s first solo album.
The 35-year-old singer/songwriter praised his wife, 37, for supporting him through the writing and recording of the album, in which he opened up for the first time about being sexually abused as a child.
He told Variety: “My wife was very pivotal to the making of this record and her support for this record is why it’s dedicated to her. . The natural world should be involved in this process.
“Of course we share everything behind the scenes and it’s only natural to share my work process with her to a certain extent. It’s not a co-dependent relationship in that sense, but it’s one that I think is very valuable. Kind of, the most rewarding of the whole process, especially making records.”
And, Brandi Carlile, who co-wrote and sang on the new album’s final track “How,” praised the album “Self-Titled” as a “fall of trust.”
Marcus said: “I like how Brandi sees it. Of course, I felt a little bit of a distrustful day doing ‘How’ with her in the studio and she came to get me. I don’t think it’s with my audience. Trust drop exercises. They’re not responsible for my well-being. But the writing process is, in a way, there’s an element of “I think I’m going to be controlled by the people around me, and I trust them.”
“I avoid language about bravery or courage because it’s too judgmental for me. A lot of people haven’t been able to take the opportunity to talk about something more difficult. And, you know, it took me over 25 years not talking”
