Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City, in partnership with the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence and Catalyst, the region’s first cleantech startup accelerator, aims to establish a new AI and clean energy innovation unit for AI startups and A new accelerator program.
This is part of Masdar City’s efforts to foster clean energy and advance artificial intelligence (AI), clean tech and smart city technologies, including autonomous transportation, across the region.
According to Masdar City, the partnership will support the exploration of several new initiatives, including providing study and business opportunities for students and graduates of MBZUAI, enhancing support for artificial intelligence and clean energy start-ups, and using advanced data Analytics and artificial intelligence to improve buildings’ performance.
The three entities will also explore the development of a new AI-focused accelerator program to encourage more MBZUAI graduates to succeed in entrepreneurship, it added.
Mohamed Al Breiki, Executive Director, Sustainable Real Estate Development, Masdar City, signed the MoU with Sultan Al Hajji, Vice President, Public Affairs and Alumni Relations, MBZUAI; and Stephen Severance, Catalyst’s Masdar City Development Director.
“This agreement will help strengthen Masdar City’s position as a hub for cleantech, artificial intelligence and autonomous transport start-ups. It will also build on the already strong links between these industries and help leverage youth and The power of start-ups to make meaningful change,” said Al Breiki at a signing ceremony held during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2023.
“One of the most critical predictors of a successful startup is access to industry talent, and the partnership between Catalyst, Masdar City and MBZUAI has created a platform to attract and retain some of the leading institutions in AI to Abu Dhabi ,”He said.
As part of the agreement, MBZUAI graduates may be eligible for special treatment to fast-track their entrepreneurial ventures within Masdar City, while current students may be able to participate in paid internships at various companies within the Masdar City Free Zone.
Al Hajji said: “From AI incubation to research capabilities in clean energy, to mentoring of start-ups and AI professionals, this collaboration can significantly enhance the UAE’s position as a global destination for AI.”
According to Severance, The Catalyst hopes to support startups that want to change the world through sustainable, clean technology and artificial intelligence.
“This agreement will give us greater access to top talent and provide entrepreneurs with greater opportunities to develop breakthrough technologies. We look forward to working together,” he added.
