Masdar inks deal to explore green hydrogen export to Europe

Masdar, one of the world’s leading clean energy companies, Port of Amsterdam, SkyNRG, Evos Amsterdam and Zenith Energy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the development of a green hydrogen supply chain between Abu Dhabi and Amsterdam to support Dutch and European markets.

The MoU was signed by Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Port of Amsterdam Managing Director Gert-Jan Nieuwenhuizen, SkyNRG Chief Development Officer Maarten van Dijk, Evos Business Development Manager Bart van der Meer, and Zenith Energy’s New Energy Director General Manager Ellen Ruhotas.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman-designate of COP28 and Chairman of Masdar, and Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra.

Dr Al Jaber said: “This agreement builds on the existing relationship between the UAE and the Netherlands and demonstrates our shared commitment to explore low- and zero-carbon energy solutions. The UAE aims to play a central role in the emerging green hydrogen economy role, this partnership with the Port of Amsterdam and relevant players in the green hydrogen space will help position Abu Dhabi as a key hub for the development of green hydrogen.”

Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra said: “The Netherlands is keen to establish a green hydrogen corridor with future major exporters such as the UAE. Our country has the ability to become a hydrogen hub for the Northwest European market. I welcome the cooperation between Dutch and UAE companies in the field of hydrogen energy and look forward to further cooperation. Strengthen cooperation between our two countries.”

Under the MoU, both parties will work together to develop a green hydrogen supply chain, with a focus on production in Abu Dhabi and export to the Netherlands via the Port of Amsterdam. The exported green hydrogen will be channeled to key sectors in Europe – sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), steelmaking and shipping fuel supply – and will also be supplied to emerging European offtakers via pipelines, trucks and barges. The parties will jointly explore several modes of hydrogen transport, focusing on liquid organic hydrogen carriers and liquid hydrogen.

The Port of Amsterdam, operator of the fourth largest port in Europe, is committed to expanding green hydrogen capabilities and is working closely with the business community active in its port on green hydrogen development. SkyNRG, the global leader in SAF, is developing a network of SAF production facilities that will require green hydrogen as an input. Zenith Energy and Evos Amsterdam are operators of some of the port’s most prominent blending and storage terminals, with Zenith developing a liquid hydrogen supply chain and Evos Amsterdam working on a liquid organic hydrogen carrier supply chain.

Koen Overtoom, CEO of the Port of Amsterdam, said: “We are very pleased with this new collaboration. SkyNRG, Evos and Zenith Energy are the driving forces behind the development of hydrogen in the Port of Amsterdam and they are part of our goal of importing at least 1 million tons of green hydrogen per year.” Crucial. Green hydrogen is produced using green electricity from renewable sources such as wind or solar energy, in a process that separates water into oxygen and hydrogen through electrolysis. The International Renewable Energy Agency says hydrogen will be an important part of a net-zero energy system and play a key role in decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors such as heavy industry and long-distance transport. The global green hydrogen market is expected to reach $72 billion by 2030, while PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) estimates that hydrogen demand could range from 15 to 500 million metric tons per year by 2050.

In December last year, Masdar announced its new shareholding structure and green hydrogen business unit, aiming to achieve 100 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity and 1 million tons of green hydrogen production per year by 2030. Masdar has actively participated in several energy-related projects for green hydrogen production. Last year, Masdar signed an agreement with major state-backed organizations in Egypt to collaborate on the development of a green hydrogen production plant in the country, with the aim of producing up to 480,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year with 4 GW of electrolyzer capacity by 2030. – trade arab news agency
