Masdar launches global SkillUP to tackle climate change

The Masdar Youth 4 Sustainable Development (Y4S) global initiative has launched an online platform called SkillUP, which aims to equip 1 million young people with the knowledge and skills they need to combat climate change by 2030. They will use these skills in their communities, schools and workplaces in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The newly launched Y4S SkillUP platform leverages the appeal of gamified mobile apps by providing young people with accessible, self-paced opportunities to develop skills critical to achieving the SDGs, while enhancing their transition employability, thereby allowing them to participate in the climate change global economy.

Under the patronage of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office, Masdar, a global leader in renewable energy projects, launched Y4S in 2020 to empower future generations locally and globally Sustainability Leader.

Sustainability Champion

Dr Lamya Nawaf Fawwaz, Executive Director, Brand and Strategic Initiatives, Masdar, said: “Engaging young people as sustainability champions is at the heart of Y4S’s mission as we at Masdar recognise the huge untapped potential young people have in driving sustainable change, which It is critical that we educate and prepare them now to make a meaningful contribution to our global energy transition.

“Masdar is expanding its renewable energy portfolio to over 40 countries and is working through one of our strategic initiatives, Y4S, to attract students and young professionals wherever they are and with what they find attractive This is why SkillUp’s globally accessible mobile platform is so promising.”

Self-learning

By leveraging the latest educational technology, the Y4S SkillUp platform provides 42 hours of self-paced learning and engagement opportunities, from video presentations to informative materials, activity sheets and interactive quizzes – all built around more than 20 specific skills identified in the Relevant and necessary to achieve the SDGs in Y4S’s Future of Skills Report 2030.

SkillUp users can complete specific courses to earn certificates in each of more than 20 skills spanning five broad categories: Knowledge, Personal, Human, Cognitive, and Design Thinking.

Within each category, areas of focus include STEM knowledge, critical reasoning, digital fluency, creative thinking, collaborative thinking, new media literacy, ecological spirit, entrepreneurship, self-promotion, problem solving, active learning, resilience and adaptation Competencies, Intercultural Competence, Leadership, People Management, Communication, Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence, Public Speaking, Sense-making, Interpretation, Design Thinking and Creativity.

Defining challenges related to the SDGs

The SkillUp platform’s “Innovate with Y4S Unit” also provides users with self-paced coaching sessions on each of the 17 SDGs, after which they have the opportunity to define SDG-related challenges in their daily lives, and Come up with actionable solutions for their communities, schools and workplaces.

A key Masdar strategic initiative, Y4S aligns with the UAE’s 50 Principles, the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals to mitigate climate change by building youth capacity, resilience and resilience.

Specifically, Y4S runs a two-year education and skills training programme: the Future Sustainability Leader (FSL) and Sustainability Ambassador (SA) programmes – both of which aim to bring sustainable Leaders learn about best sustainability practices and leadership with global policymakers, corporate decision makers, entrepreneurs and technology pioneers.
