DUBAI: Emirati fashion designer and entrepreneur Noora Al Alawi has been trying to break the mold with her stylish and eccentric abayas. For Al Alawi, they’re more than just fashion. They are a statement.
Her studio in Al Quoz, Nuna Atelier, is emblematic of her drive to empower women and businesses in the UAE.
This year, in honor of the UAE’s 45th National Day, Al Alawi has designed a special robe called Skyline 45.
In less typical Al Alawi style, the robe lacks the red and green colors of the UAE flag, but still stands out with its simple monochromatic palette, with black embroidery showing the Dubai skyline on the cuffs. The price of this robe is Dh1,600.
We spoke to Al Alawi about her designs and inspirations.
Tell us more about Skyline 45. How did you come up with this idea?
I was thinking of designing a gown to commemorate the upcoming 45th National Day of the UAE, I saw a lot of gowns with a lot of green and red, so I decided to use only pearl white fabric, dotted with the famous Dubai skyline, which is That’s why I named it Skyline 45. To me, it symbolizes Dubai’s futuristic dream in terms of architecture and landscape, where anything is possible, while retaining the humility and purity of a people rich in traditional culture.
Why did you choose white for the UAE’s national day celebration?
I really like white. I think it reflects simplicity and timeless elegance and purity. I decided not to go for a colorful look because I wanted something different this time. I wanted the beauty of the fabric to shine through and the UAE’s famous skyline to be the center of attention.
What are the biggest challenges for UAE designers?
Challenge is very healthy because it keeps designers on their toes. I think the biggest one is time. Since Dubai is so fast-paced and changing every moment, you have to always think fast about the next trend. And since Dubai is on the global map, fashion evolves more than that, so you always need to meet international standards. The fashion industry moves very fast and it keeps me young and great.
Kendall Jenner recently wore your robe. How did she hear about your collection and what did she have to say?
I’m proud to be noticed by a Hollywood superstar. A friend introduced me to her during her “secret” visit to the UAE. She and her team at the hotel called us and gave her different kinds of robes, luckily she chose one of my collection. She said she loved it, and she was even very kind and generous enough to take a photo with it. She definitely loves Emirati heritage and has a lot of positive things to say about the UAE fashion scene.
The UAE is a melting pot of all nationalities. Do you think fashion can unite everyone?
I think fashion has always been a driving force for anyone to showcase their creativity and be able to connect with others. Especially living in Dubai where there are so many different cultures and nationalities. You can always find stunning fashion-forward women with unique fashion styles. I always end up chatting randomly with them at the mall or coffee shop, sharing tips and fashion advice swapping numbers and becoming friends, sometimes it can really break down some walls. However, the best thing that can unite us is kindness, the best fashion statement anyone can wear.
What would you say to the UAE leader?
I want to thank them for their genuine leadership, who have achieved something in such a short period of time that no country has ever done. They truly are the greatest leaders of all time. They really care about their people, they really believe in investing in their country, they want the best for their people. I really think living in the UAE is a blessing.
