Mercedes and R8G advance to Abu Dhabi semifinals

[ad_1]

Yesterday’s group stage is over, we still have two semi-final places to confirm.

The teams that finished second and third in their respective groups now face off in the wild-card playoffs, where they travel to Abu Dhabi and reach the semifinals on July 22.

Both games were fun from start to finish, here are all the highlights!

final match controversy

We started at Silverstone with Aston Martin’s Manual Biancolilla holding his relay pole position at Turn 1. However, Jiri Toman had other ideas and drove his R8G into the Village from the inside to take the lead. The R8G was quick enough in the last two races to win and open the race.

In the team race, the R8G started again on pole, but the three Aston teams lined up behind them. Alejandro Sanchez slips at the first corner due to contact with Erhan Jajovski. Marcell Csincsik was bossy throughout, and despite constant pressure from Biancolilla he led from lights to the pin and helped R8G lead 2-0.

For the second part, we went to Yas Marina Circuit, where Aston Martin had to win two races to have a chance at the semi-finals. Maybe it was in Biancolilla’s mind as he wouldn’t let Toman and 1 inch into Turn 1.

A connection was made, and Tommen expanded and hit the wall, losing three seconds in the process. This proved crucial as stewards chose not to punish Aston for the move. A 2-1 aggregate score means giving it your all in team play.

Aston Martin dominated the front row, but Csincsik got off to a lightning-fast start and moved up to second. Csincsik then hit leader Biancolilla into the hairpin, spinning Aston. R8G leads 1-2, but will the stewards be involved?

Biancolilla didn’t wait to know, though, as he sprinted into the chicane from the inside of Jajovski on the penultimate lap. He wasn’t far enough next to him to be tagged and dropped to last place. That’s a “Vive Marie” move, it missed, and R8G made it to the semifinals.

Sensational Silverstone Duel

We restarted at Silverstone with Williams’ Michael Romanidis starting on pole. The Greek racer got off to a good start, but Jarno Opmel brought him into the Village. Romanidis then re-passed him to Brookland and regained his P1 spot.

After the first leg, Cedric Thome had a good run on Daniele Haddad on the Wellington Straight, but couldn’t quite finish the pass. In the final game, Bono Huis immediately tried to pass Shanaka Clay to Village, but he managed to get into Brooklands in the end. Wyeth kept it on the checkered flag, but a penalty gave Williams the opening point.

For the team race, Mercedes dominated the front row, leading 1-2-3 after Opmeer passed Romanidis for third place. Williams would fight back, but contact would result in Klay, Romanidis and Opmeer all splitting through Copps. Mercedes held their 1-2 to the finish to tie the game at 1-1.

Mugello presided over the second part of the race, with Mercedes starting on pole. Romanidis was unable to pass Opmeer at Turn 1. The race was close from start to finish, but neither Clay nor Haddad could challenge the leading Silver Arrow. Mercedes leads Williams 2-1.

Williams must win the team event to have a chance at the semi-finals, but it’s all about Mercedes in the front row. With Hawes leading the charge, Tomei went wide at the start, pushing Romanidis far. Wyeth remained calm throughout and although Clay never left his mirror, he finished P1 to win the race and send Mercedes to Abu Dhabi!

Semi-final setup

The semi-finals of the V10 R League this season will be July 22.

R8G’s wildcard win was a match against the seemingly unstoppable Redline.

Meanwhile, Mercedes will go head-to-head with the in-form YAS Heat.
