Militia killed in protests in central Iran: state media

[ad_1]

A member of Iran’s security forces has been shot dead during protests in the city of Semiron, state media said on Sunday, more than 100 days after the death of Mahsa Amini sparked unrest across the country.

Iran has been rocked by protests – what authorities have dubbed “riots” – since Amini, 22, died in custody on Sept. 16 for allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code for women.

“A Basij member was killed by militants in Semiron city,” the official news agency IRNA reported, referring to paramilitary forces linked to the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Protesters gathered late Saturday in the city about 470 kilometers (290 miles) south of the capital Tehran in central Isfahan province, IRNA said.

They rallied in front of the District Administration Building and at other locations in Semirom, it added.

“Security forces were deployed in the city to establish order and, in some cases, clashed with several rioters,” the report said.

Iranian officials say hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed and thousands arrested in unrest across the country.

Tehran has accused hostile foreign powers and opposition groups of fomenting the unrest.

Last month, Iran executed two 23-year-old men convicted of attacking security forces in connection with the protests.

Nine others have been sentenced to death, the judiciary said. Dozens of protesters this week also face charges that could carry the death penalty, activists said.
