Mount Pleasant’s new entertainment venue features gaming, food, bar, opening date confirmed

MOUNT PLEASANT — David Breen understands the games people love to play.

The Boston native has been in the arcade and entertainment industry since he was 7, when his parents started roller skating Business 1978.

Since then, the 51-year-old East Cooper transplant has brought a new concept to the lowlands.

PINZ Entertainment Group CEO Breen and business partner Jim Smith plan to launch MIX on June 1 in the 11,122-square-foot space that was once Butcher & Boar Dining room At Brookgreen Town Center at 730 Coleman Blvd., next door to Gold’s Gym. Before that, it was Nanfeng Restaurant.

Customers who have visited the nearest dining establishment before it closes in 2021 will notice several features that Breen decided to incorporate into the entertainment site.

“We kept a lot of penny floor inside the bar and around the wall of heads behind the bar,” Breen said. “We just drew the heads and turned one of them upside down for fun.”

The duck bowling area consists of eight lanes. Next to a wall of faces including famous figures including Albert Einstein, patrons will find a curling platform, ax throwing cage and many other games.

In addition to a revamped indoor bar, the venue also offers an outdoor alcoholic beverage area and courtyard, including swing tables and a small stage built around a tree. Table tennis and corn hole will also be available.

“We redecorated the bar outside by taking down the walls because it was too dark in here,” Breen said as he walked through the site and said of the changes. “We wanted to open it up and make it more attractive.”

A separate speakeasy was created off part of the previously spacious kitchen area. It will be used for private parties and will only be accessible with a password. Just outside the door, guests can get a behind-the-scenes look at how the duckbill machine works before wandering down dark corridors with duckbill lights mounted on the ceiling as light fixtures.

In addition to more than a dozen local and national beer offerings, MIX will also offer what Breen calls “premium pub food,” including appetizers, burgers, flatbreads and salads.

The site offers two sets of restrooms, one accessible from the terrace and the other indoors. The interior has been completely redone, and visitors will see Abraham Lincoln holding a glass of beer on the wallpaper leading to the interior restrooms.

Brin’s other businesses, along with the 33,000-square-foot skating rink that his parents owned for many years, include rock climbing, bowling, laser tag, bars and restaurants.

Breen operates five other entertainment venues in the Northeast under the PINZ brand. Similar to Stars & Strikes bowling and arcade venues, such as the one on Ladson Road in Somerville, in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and upstate New York.

Located on a site leased from Charleston-based developer The Beach Co., MIX is an entirely new venture.

“We wanted to try a new concept and see how it would work,” Brin said. “I took one look at it when it was a restaurant and decided it was the right place. I think it’s a great place for us.”

Breen is not alone in the PINZ Entertainment Group business. His wife, Susan, handles the payroll.

The Breen Plan MIX is open from 4pm to 10pm or 11pm on weekdays and 11am to midnight or 1am on weekends. The center will be open to families until 7pm, after which it will be open to those 21 and over. Pre-orders are recommended for some games.

He plans to open another MIX in Florida as soon as 2024, but he didn’t disclose the location because it hasn’t been fully lined up yet.
