Variants like Mohammed and Mohammad also appear in the top 100 names.
According to the Office of National Statistics (ONS), as reflected in the birth registration data, Mohammed is one of the most popular names for newborn boys in England and Wales in 2020.
Muhammad is the fifth most popular, and its variants-Mohammed and Mohammad-also entered the top 100, ranking 32 and 74 respectively.
Data show that Muhammad topped the list among baby names in London, Northwest England, Yorkshire and the Humber, and West Midlands, which roughly reflects the spread of Asian communities in England.
This year, 3,710 babies in England and Wales were named Muhammad, 1,615 babies were named Muhammad, and 751 babies were named Muhammad.
The names of the top ten boys are: Oliver, George, Arthur, Noah, Muhammad, Leo, Oscar, Harry, Archie and Jack.
ONS stated that Oliver and Olivia have become the most popular names for boys and girls in England and Wales for the fifth consecutive year. Ivy and Rosie replaced Grace and Freya in the top 10 girl names, and Archie replaced Charlie in the top 10 boy names.
It added that mothers 35 and older continue to choose more traditional names, while young mothers choose more modern and shorter names.
Siân Bradford of ONS Vital Statistics Output said: “Oliver and Olivia have been at the top of the list as the most popular boy and girl names in 2020, but some interesting changes have taken place under them. We continue to see the age of the mother. Have an impact on the choice of baby names”.
She added: “Archie entered the top 10 boy names for the first time, driven by young mothers and obvious royal connections. For girls, Ivy rose to sixth place. Popular culture continues to provide inspiration for baby names. Whether it’s a character on our favorite show or a popular celebrity.”
