Myanmar condemns preventing coup leaders from participating in ASEAN summit | Military News

[ad_1]

The military government pressured the Southeast Asian bloc to demand its representatives because the UN rapporteur warned of more violence in the northern region.

The Burmese military government condemned the decision of its Southeast Asian neighbors to invite only one non-politician to participate in the upcoming regional summit in order to neglect the leaders of the February 1 coup d’état, as calls for more international pressure on the coup’s leaders increased. Come higher.

The military government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release on Friday that Myanmar’s head of state or government has equal and full rights to participate in the ASEAN summit, which is composed of 10 member states.

The next summit will be held from October 26th to 28th. It is not clear who (if any) will now represent Myanmar in the meeting.

“Myanmar will not be able to accept the results of any discussions and decisions that are contrary to the provisions, objectives and cherished principles of the ASEAN Charter,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in its announcement.

According to the United Nations, in combating strikes and protests that undermined the country’s tentative democracy and sparked international condemnation, Myanmar’s security forces killed more than 1,000 civilians and arrested thousands of civilians.

The Myanmar military said the death toll was exaggerated.

The international community is exerting increasing pressure on ASEAN to take a tougher stance on Myanmar’s failure to agree on steps to end violence, allow humanitarian access, and begin dialogue with opponents—this is in line with ASEAN’s in April. The “consensus” reached is unanimous.

‘Unusual bold step’

The decision made by the ASEAN foreign ministers at an emergency meeting last week was an unusually bold step for a consensus-driven group that has traditionally supported engagement and non-interference policies.

The ministers at the meeting last Friday had differences between insisting on the tradition of non-interference and the need to sanction coup leader Min Anglai to maintain credibility. The talks told Reuters.

The military said after the meeting that ASEAN’s decision runs counter to its long-term principles.

At the same time, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, urged the UN General Assembly to take action and denied that the country’s military rulers “need to continue to hold them hostage: money, weapons, and legitimacy”.

Andrews urged the United Nations to pass a resolution prohibiting the sale of weapons to Myanmar.

“This action is necessary because weapons and dual-use technologies continue to be sold and shipped to the military government,” he said.

Andrews also called for sanctions on Myanmar’s oil and gas companies, which he said are the military’s largest single source of revenue.

The UN special rapporteur also warned that more bloodshed may occur in the country as the military transfers “tens of thousands of troops, heavy weapons and other military assets” to the northern part of the country, where the rebels are fighting the government.

“Unfortunately, we may be on the eve of another disaster, including the loss of innocent lives and more human rights violations,” he said.

The opposition National Unity Government (NUG) also warned of military movements in Chin and Kayah states.

In addition to previously reported incidents of military violence in the Sagaing and Magway regions of the country, the League of Nations stated that the recent northward movement of troops and other violent incidents “showed that, with full knowledge, extensive and systematic targeting of civilians was carried out. Attack mode”. Military leadership. “
